{"id":451924,"date":"2020-11-02T14:41:12","date_gmt":"2020-11-02T21:41:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=451924"},"modified":"2020-11-02T14:41:12","modified_gmt":"2020-11-02T21:41:12","slug":"massachusetts-high-school-winter-sports-postseasons-canceled-because-of-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/massachusetts-high-school-winter-sports-postseasons-canceled-because-of-pandemic\/","title":{"rendered":"Massachusetts High School Winter Sports Postseasons Canceled Because of Pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association has canceled the 2020-21 winter postseason for all high school winter sports in the state.<\/p>\n<p>The decision was made because of the affects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and affects swimming and diving directly.<\/p>\n<p>According to reports, the MIAA Board of Directors voted to cancel the 2020-21 winter postseason, following the recommendation of its COVID-19 Task Force and Tournament Management Committee. The vote was unanimous.<\/p>\n<p>The MIAA Board also voted to keep its current winter start and end dates of, respectively, Nov. 30 and Feb. 21. So the winter regular seasons could still happen in full, but the postseason, that would bring large groups from different regions together, was canceled.<\/p>\n<p>It has been a tough year for Massachusetts high school sports. The Fall season will end without a tournament, while Spring 2020 never happened and Winter 2019-20 was called off days before state championships were to take place.<\/p>\n<p>The MIAA also voted unanimously to recommend teams limit their schedules to local or league opponents to minimize exposure to communities that might have higher COVID-19 rates.<\/p>\n<p>Boston University hosted the state swim meets last winter, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology hosted the North and South sectional meets in Cambridge.<\/p>\n<p>Nantucket swimming coach <strong>Jim Pignato<\/strong> told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ack.net\/news\/20201030\/high-schools-miaa-cancels-winter-postseason\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Inquirer and Mirror<\/a> that swimming\u2019s lack of competition locations has been difficult, especially with college facilities not wanting outside people on campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe swimming postseason is really predicated on access to collegiate pools,\u201d Pignato told <em>The Inquirer and Mirror<\/em>. \u201cJust looking at that, the way things have been shaping up, that\u2019s probably going to be one of the last places that would allow outside organizations to come in.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-container ad ad-300x250\">\n<div id=\"lazyad-13\" class=\"\" data-gh-object-lazy-loaded=\"true\" data-gh-object-offset=\"400\" data-secondlevel-7103=\"\" data-secondlevel-mobile-7103=\"\" data-gh-object=\"{&quot;method&quot;:&quot;__gh__webApp.ads.dfp.createLazySlotOL&quot;,&quot;data&quot;:{&quot;container&quot;:&quot;.ad-lazy&quot;}}\" data-gh-lazy-ad-bucket-targeting=\"{&quot;keyword&quot;:&quot;High School,News&quot;,&quot;ad-type&quot;:&quot;standard&quot;,&quot;slot&quot;:&quot;View Plus Med Rec&quot;,&quot;sov&quot;:&quot;base ROS&quot;,&quot;adcount&quot;:&quot;3&quot;}\" data-dimensions=\"[300,250]\" data-gh-ad-remnant=\"unknown\" data-gh-gptadslots-id=\"12\" data-google-query-id=\"CJbl1tPm5OwCFcdV1QodsMIPwg\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association has canceled the 2020-21 winter postseason for all high school winter sports in the state.
