In a letter to the community by athletic director\u00a0<strong>Bill Beekman<\/strong>, it cited \u201ca financial crisis unlike any we\u2019ve ever seen\u201d with a best-case scenario of a $30 million shortfall.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/msuspartans.com\/news\/2020\/10\/22\/general-michigan-state-announces-plans-to-discontinue-swimming-diving-after-2021.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">From the statement<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe understand that the news is devastating to our outstanding student-athletes in these sports, as well as to their coaches, but with every thoughtful analysis it became increasingly clear that we were not positioned to offer the best experience to our student-athletes, either now or in the future.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cToday\u2019s decision does not end our commitment to the student-athletes and staff within the swimming and diving programs. Scholarship commitments will be honored beyond this year for any student-athletes who choose to finish their undergraduate degree at Michigan State. For student-athletes who wish to transfer to another institution, Michigan State Athletics will help them with their transition. Contracts for all coaches will be honored (through June 30, 2021). Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/rikako-ikee-gets-first-lap-as-tokyo-olympic-swimming-venue-opens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">By Matthew De George<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Tokyo Olympic Committee formally opened the swimming venue for the 2021 Olympics on Saturday, with\u00a0<strong>Rikako Ikee<\/strong>\u00a0taking part in a ceremonial opening relay.<\/p>\n<p>Tokyo Governor<strong>\u00a0Yuriko<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Koike<\/strong>\u00a0was at Saturday\u2019s unveiling, finally getting to show off a venue that was done in February. The originally scheduled March reveal was caused by the COVID-19 pandemic that delayed the Olympics by a year. It comes nine months ahead of the scheduled date for the Opening Ceremonies of the delayed Games on July 23, 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The swimming venue will seat 15,000 fans. Situated off Tokyo Bay, the price tag\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/english.kyodonews.net\/news\/2020\/10\/1f520b225cb2-olympic-swimming-venue-unveiled-japan-star-ikee-among-1st-in-pool.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">checks in at a reported $520 million<\/a>, the second most expensive venue, behind only the $1.43 billion national stadium that will host the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. The five-level arena will host swimming, diving and artistic swimming events. It\u2019s one of six purpose-built venues for the games.<\/p>\n<p>The aquatic center is a big item on a budget that, at a price tag of $12.6 billion, is as the most expensive Olympics ever, per an academic study.<\/p>\n<p>Ikee formally baptized the pool, the latest step in the promising young star\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/rikako-ikee-being-alive-is-a-miracle-as-she-looks-to-inspire-following-leukemia-battle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">inspiring battle back<\/a>\u00a0from a leukemia diagnosis\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/rikako-ikee-one-year-on-leukemia-fight-was-big-turning-point-in-my-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more than a year ago<\/a>. Five of them are Level I violations, the highest level, which include a lack of institutional control and the university\u2019s failure to monitor programs. Busch and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college\/2020\/10\/25\/arizona-sean-miller-violations-ncca-notice-of-allegations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">men\u2019s basketball<\/a>\u00a0coach\u00a0<strong>Sean Miller<\/strong>\u00a0were each accused of lack of control,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/2158740\/2020\/10\/25\/arizona-sean-miller-ncaa-investigaton-fbi-book-richardson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according to a report by\u00a0<\/a><em>The Athletic.<\/em>\u00a0Busch\u2019s involvement in the investigation was one of the new details unearthed by the report.<\/p>\n<p>Busch was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/augie-busch-named-head-coach-of-university-of-arizona-swim-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">named the head coach<\/a>\u00a0of the University of Arizona in July 2017. Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/division-ii-grants-winter-athletes-further-eligibility-moves-swimming-championships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>By Matthew De George<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>NCAA\u2019s Division II\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncaa.org\/about\/resources\/media-center\/news\/dii-grants-winter-athletes-further-season-competition-relief?division=d2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this week announced<\/a>\u00a0further changes to accommodate the ongoing COVID-19 disruptions, including further eligibility relief for winter athletes. The decisions were made at this week\u2019s Division II Management Council meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Winter athletes who competed in the 2020-21 season, \u201cwill receive an additional season of competition through a waiver\u201d that extends eligibility. It\u2019s the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/division-ii-approves-eligibility-waiver-for-athletes-affected-by-covid-19-in-2020-21\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">same flexibility afforded to spring sport athletes<\/a>\u00a0after the 2020 season was cancelled. The flipside to the announcement is the expectation that, from the press release, \u201ctheir seasons will be impacted by COVID-19 in ways similar to fall sports.\u201d It adds to financial aid flexibility approved by the Management Council in September.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWinter student-athletes lost out on their championship opportunity last season and many will have shortened, conference-only seasons this year,\u201d said\u00a0<strong>Chris Graham,<\/strong>\u00a0commissioner of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and chair of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncaa.org\/governance\/committees\/division-ii-management-council\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Division II Management Council<\/a>. \u201cWe believe providing the maximum season-of-competition waiver flexibility is the right thing to do for winter student-athletes who continue to be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Council also approved a one-week delay for the 2021 Division II\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncaa.org\/championships\/division-ii-mens-and-womens-swimming-and-diving\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">men\u2019s and women\u2019s swimming and diving championships<\/a>, from March 10-13 to March 17-20. The location remains Birmingham, Alabama. The stated reason is to break up the 2021 Division II National Championships festival, which had the wrestling, swimming and indoor track &amp; field championships held simultaneously at the same location. Delaying swimming reduces the amount of people at the CrossPlex in Birmingham to aid with social distancing. The wrestling championships will shift location.
