NORTH Carolina's women's and men's swimming and diving teams showed their collective "Tar Heels" to the field tonight while splashing to both team titles at the 12th annual Nike Cup here.

The three-day competition wrapped up this evening at UNC's Maurice J. Koury Natatorium.

UNC Coach Frank Comfort's women's team, defending Atlantic Coast Conference champs, wracked-up with 959 points, 385.5 points ahead of second-place Virginia Tech, which came alive in a big way at this meet.

The UNC men's team accumulated 757 points, 44 points more than runner-up and No. 9-ranked Tennessee.

*   *    *    *    *

The women's side ofthe competition was highlighted by Tar Heel senior Laura Collier's ACC and school records with her win in the 200 backstroke, 1:57.83. The old conference-record was 1:57.97 by Clemson's Jennifer Mihalik in 1999. The old 'Heel record was 1:58.22 by Summer Mack from the '00 ACCs.

Collier's former pr was 1:59.63, also from the ACCs two years ago. Second was Michigan's Erin Abbey, 100 back winner who earlier also led off the Wolverines' winning 400 medley relay. She clocked a pr 1:58.41 while third was Carolina's Kathleen Quinn (2:00.77), younger sister of UNC 200 breast record-holder Sean, who won the men's race.

Quinn's teammate, junior Kelly Weeks, tied the Nike Cup record of 1:58.18 with her win in the 200 butterfly. She shares the standard with former Tennessee All-America Tori DeSilvia, who swam her time at the 1995 Cup. Weeks' winning swim was an NCAA auto cut.

Michigan's Ann Weilbacher, 100 fly champ, was runner-up in a seasonal pr 1:59.19, just off the "A" standard of 1:58.98.

Weeks also won the 500 free with a 4:48+ and earlier this month won ACC Swimmer of the Week honors for her UNC and conference-record in the 200 fly (1:58.03) against Minnesota.

LSU's Stephanie Smith went a pr 16:21.41 to win the 1650 free, with Carolina junior Whitney Smith second (pr 16:26.69) — with both women making the NCAA "A" cut of 16:27.51.

In the super final of the 100 freestyle, Carolina junior Jessi Perruquet finished first (49.56), an automatic qualifer for NCAAs. Her pr is 49.30 from last season's collegiate championship and come ACCs (if not before) she'll be after the UNC school record of 48.89 by Richelle Depold.

Perruquet's defending ACC 200 free champ and holds the Carolina record with her 1:45.65, also from last spring's NCAAs.Championships.

Kansas' Amy Gruber, 50 free runner-up in a pr 22.96, was second in the 100 ("B" cut 50.22). 'Heel senior Christy Watkins, 50 free winner Thursday with a meet-record 22.49 (fastest nationally), was third (50.51).

Carolina added another "w" to its ledger when junior Becky Acker won the 200 breaststroke with her 2:15.69, NCAA "B" cut.

Michigan, with Abbey leading off in a 50.04, won the 400 free relay and Carolina placed second. The Wolverines' winning time, 3:20.38, was just off the NCAA "A" cut of 3:20.26. UNC's 3:24.12 was good enough to meet the "B" cut.

The Wolverines' Tealin Kelemen also added the 3-meter diving title to the 1-merer crown she wonThursday.

*    *     *     *     *

In men's action, Tennessee freshman Casey Dauw won his third event in three tries and recorded his third pr as he stroked to a 15:28.86 1650 freestyle win.

Earlier, the Illinois native won the 500 (4:22+) and 400 IM (3:50.92), bringing a smile to Vol coach John Trembley's face wider than the road from Chapel Hill to Knoxville.

UNC swimmers took second, third and fourth places in the mile as junior Yuri Suguiyama went a 15:33.08, sophomore Reid Owen finished in 15:39.49 and senior Judd Glasco touched in 15:41.83. Owen's swim was his career-best by over 18 seconds.

The NCAA "A" cut is a tough 15:01.39 but the "B" standard is a more modest 15:28.43.

Another performance that had Trembley beaming was junior sprinter Renato Gueraldi's second meet record and second No. 1 national time, this one a 43.86 in the 100 free.

Thursday, Gueraldi went a pr and national No. 1 19.57 for the 50 free.

Tonight he didn't quite equal his century pr of 43.19, he still managed to eclipse the old nation-leading 100 free time of 44.06 by Florida's Carlos Jayme — a fellow Brazilian too.

The Vols visit Florida for a dual meet next Feb. 1 and the waters of the Gators' Stephen C. O'Connell Center Natatorium are sure to roil over when these two tangle.

(The "loser" will have a second shot three weeks later at Auburn during the SEC Championships.)

Carolina senior Sean Quinn took first in his specialty, the 200 breaststroke, touching in a meet-record 1:58.65. The previous standard was 1:58.79 by former Tar Heel Ethan Hall in 1998.

The UNC record-holder (1:56.39 from last season's ACCs), Quinn also ranks third on the all-time conference list to Virginia's Ed Moses' 1:53.99. Ironically, Moses' time was done at a "Q" meet in Chapel Hill shortly after the '00 ACCs, where he was disqualified.

No. 2 on the all-time ACC list is another Cavalier, Gary Marshall, whose 1:54.79 that won the conference title last February is the meet record. He's a junior this season at Charlottesville.

Kentucky recorded a pair of wins — both by the same athlete — as junior Joey Faltraco scored victories in the 200 back (1:44.23) and 200 fly (1:47.21).

The Wildcat ace just missed the "A" cut in the backstroke (1:44.02). His pr is a UK record 1:43.96 from NCAAs this past season so come SECs — if not before — he should earn his invitation to the Big Dance.

In the 400 freestyle relay, Tennessee, with Gueraldi leading off in a "modest" 44.57, won handily with its 2:59.80 — No. 1 nationally. The Vols won the '01 NCAA 400 free relay title, along with the 200 medley too.

UNC senior Stephen Krebs won the men's three-meter diving event with 548.00. Three other Tar Heels finished in the top eight with junior Eric Poitras second (524.90), freshman Ryan Matuszak fourth (455.75) and senior Rob McMillan sixth (425.20).

The Tar Heel divers provided the key points that helped power Carolina past Tennessee for the team championship.

FINAL TEAM SCORES

Women:
1.
