HAVE the Dawgs lost their bite? The Georgia men's and women's swimming and diving teams suffered their first losses of the season as both teams fell to Florida at the Stephen C. O¹Connell Center Natatorium Saturday in Gainesville.

The No. 2 Lady Bulldogs were defeated by the No. 3 Lady Gators 137-106, while the 11th-ranked Bulldogs were on the short side of a 130-111 decision against
the seventh-ranked Gator men.

"We had some exceptional performances today," said Georgia head coach Jack Bauerle. "It is never fun losing, but we will build on this. Hopefully this
will help us in the long run. It came down to the bitter end, and we are proud of the kids' effort."

Mary DeScenza and Maritza Correia were both double winners for the Lady Bulldogs. DeScenza won her first event of the afternoon with a season-best and NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:47.19 in the 200-yard freestyle. Rebecca Rose finished fourth with a B-cut time of 1:50.21.

DeScenza later won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:57.46, more than three seconds ahead of her nearest competitor.

Correia claimed victory in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.70. She later led a 1-2 punch in the 100-yard freestyle by taking top honors with a time of 49.37, while Paige Kearns stopped the clock in 50.75 for second place and an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.

The foursome of Lauren Gettel, Sarah Poewe, DeScenza and Kearns recorded a time of 3:39.18 to win the 400-yard medley relay. The mark was the fifth fastest time in the event in the history of the program and the top time for any Lady Bulldog team in dual competition.

Gettel was runner-up in the 200-yard backstroke with a season-best and NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:57.59. Poewe, who finished second in both breaststroke events, took third in the 200-yard individual medley and was one of three Lady Bulldogs to record an NCAA provisional time in the event. Tricia Harm and Katie Yevak posted B-cut times as well.

Brooke Bassham finished second (3-meter) and third (1-meter) in the springboard diving events.

"We had several close races (on the women's side). I think the score was very deceptive. Florida was a better team that we were today. Hopefully this will help us down the road," said Bauerle. "This was a very high-level meet, probably the highest level dual meet in the country this fall. Florida is one of the top three teams in the country.

"DeScenza was terrific. She won the 200 free and 200 fly and was a member of the 400 medley relay that had the fastest time in our history in a dual meet," added Bauerle. "Ritz did a great job also."

******************************************************
On the men's side, despite Georgia sophomore Robert Margalis' brilliant triple in the 500-1000 frees and 200 IM, Florida's men prevailed, 130-111, to hand the 'Dawgs their initial loss of the season.

(The Gator men are now 6-1 overall, 2-0 in the SEC. The women are undefeated in both. Florida's sole loss was to Michigan at home Nov. 1, and all Michigan has done since is beat No. 1 Texas Friday at Austin to remain unbeaten and likely to take over the top spot in the polls when the rankings come out next week.)

As per usual, it was Florida sprinter Carlos Jayme who was the Gators' major weapon, winning the 50-100 frees (seasonal pr 20.06/44.20) and anchoring the winning 400 medley and 400 free relays.

Other Gator winners included breaststroker Ian Chadsey (2:00.20) and defending SEC 100-200 back champ Chris Kellam, who won the 200 in 1:46.17. Diver Zack Wilson also was a key element int he Florida win as he took both boards, winning the 1-meter (397.35) and the 3-meter (351.15).

Margalis, runner-up at NCAAs in the 400 IM and a finalist in the 500-1650 frees too, won the 500 here in 4:21.67 after taking No. 1 in the 1000 (9:06.43) and 200 IM (seasonal pr 1:47.57). He and USC's Erik Vendt will be battling for gold in the distance frees and 400 IM at NCAAs; and with the duo pushing each other at Texas' world-class pool — site of the meet the final weekend of next March — it's not at all out of the realm of possibility that Michigan's Tom Dolans's American/ NCAA records in the 500 and the 400 IM — set at the 1995 championship in Indianapolis — could fall.

(Dolan's marks are 4:08.75/3:38.18, only man ever under 4:10.0 and 3:40.0, respectively. So too, for that matter, could Wolverine Chris Thompson's 1650 standard of 14:26.62 set two years ago at College Station.)

Leading by only one-point, 94-93, with three events left, the Gators won all three to pull out the exciting victory. It marked the second consecutive win by the Gators over their Georgia foe, having won last season, 147-104.

"This was a really exciting meet to be a part of," Gator Head Coach Gregg Troy said. "The guys were tested and they responded terrifically."

The late heroics began with sophomore diver Wilcox, as he won the three-meter competition. It was his second win of the afternoon, as he started the men's competition with a victory in the one-meter diving.

Wilcox's victory was followed by senior Chadsey's 200 breaststroke win with a season-best 2:00.20 — No. 3 nationally.. Chadsey has recorded the fastest time in this race in the last five meets that he's swum, and his time was also good for an NCAA "B" cut.

The Gators sealed the team victory with a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay. Their team was comprised of Jayme, junior Scott Schultz, sophomore Kris Wiebeck (runner-up in the 200 free) and freshman Ryan Lochte,

Florida's winning time was a 3:00.97 — a full three seconds faster than Georgia's second-place team — although in fairness to the 'Dawgs, by that time the issue had already been decided.

"It was a close one at the end," Troy said of the meet. "Everybody really picked up their level of competition."

"We could not be more pleased with our guys. We are very proud of our performance. Our men are a much better team than we were a year ago," said Georgia coach Jack Bauerle.

"Florida was heavily favored and we took them down to the last relay. We got a great performance from Robert Margalis. He had possibly the best dual-meet performance in our history. He won the 200 IM just 20 minutes after winning the 1000 (yard freestyle)."

The Gators have completed the dual-meet part of their '02 schedule but in the first two months of next year swim against Texas, Miami, Auburn, Alabama and Tennessee (women) whilethe men will battle SMU, Auburn, Alabama and Tennessee.

The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs will round out the calendar year as they host the annual Georgia Fall Invitational Dec. 6-8.

— Bill Bell

.

NCAA DIVISION 1 SWIMMING & DIVING DUAL MEET

FLORIDA VS.
