{"id":449186,"date":"2020-10-13T08:52:29","date_gmt":"2020-10-13T15:52:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=449186"},"modified":"2021-04-02T15:13:54","modified_gmt":"2021-04-02T22:13:54","slug":"daiya-seto-suspended-from-japanese-national-team-activities-until-end-of-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/daiya-seto-suspended-from-japanese-national-team-activities-until-end-of-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Daiya Seto Suspended From Japanese National Team Activities Until End of Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Japanese World Champion <strong>Daiya Seto<\/strong> has been suspended by the Japan Swimming Federation from any official Japanese national team activities as punishment for his extramarital affair that came recently to light, <em>Kyodo News<\/em> reports.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/english.kyodonews.net\/news\/2020\/10\/81e08257cad6-swimming-seto-to-sit-out-rest-of-year-as-punishment-for-affair.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report<\/a>, the Japanese Swimming Federation ruled that Seto had failed to live up to the federation&#8217;s standards for sportsmalike conduct.<\/p>\n<p>But Seto was only suspended through the end of the year. He is still eligible for the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p>He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/daiya-seto-resigns-as-japans-olympic-captain-after-marital-affair\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">resigned as captain<\/a> of Japan&#8217;s Olympic swim team last month after admitting to the affair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very sorry,\u201d Seto said, according to a federation executive that spoke with the <em>Japan Times<\/em>. \u201cI want to do my best to restore peoples\u2019 trust, so I ask for your continuing support in this effort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, Seto\u2019s agent <a href=\"https:\/\/japantoday.com\/category\/sports\/update1-japanese-swimmer-seto-admits-to-having-affair-apologizes\">issued an apology last Thursday<\/a>, a day after a magazine published a story about him being at a \u201clove hotel\u201d with someone other than his wife.<\/p>\n<p>Daiya Seto\u2019s sponsors have also weighed in on the situation. According to the report, he will forgo his image-rights agreement with the Japanese Olympic Committee. All Nippon Airways Co. has also severed ties with Seto.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been supporting Seto, but this problem does not fit with the image our company hopes to project,\u201d the company told the <em>Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Daiya Seto is the reigning world champion in the 200-meter individual medley and 400-meter individual medley and has been one of the world\u2019s elite for several years. He has turned in some of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/daiya-seto-fires-latest-warning-shot-with-406-09-effort-in-400-medley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">his best performances<\/a> in the past two years, including worlds and the Kitajima Cup to open 2020.
