Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/source-greensboro-replacing-lame-duck-iowa-as-host-of-2021-ncaa-mens-swimming-championships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>By Swimming World Editorial Team<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The 2021 NCAA Division I Men\u2019s Swimming and Diving Championships will be hosted by the Greensboro Aquatic Center in North Carolina, a source tells Swimming World.<\/p>\n<p>The decision is subject to approval by the NCAA\u2019s Championship committee.<\/p>\n<p>The championships had been slated to take place in Iowa City, Iowa, at the University of Iowa Natatorium, which had hosted the 2015 NCAA men\u2019s championships and the 2020 Big Ten women\u2019s champs. But with Iowa\u2019s decision\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/university-of-iowa-to-cut-swimming-diving-after-2020-21-season-updated\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to cut the swimming programs in August<\/a>, a campaign\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/strip-iowa-of-ncaa-champs-now-disregard-for-eliminated-programs-grows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to strip the school of hosting duties<\/a>\u00a0was successful.<\/p>\n<p>The Greensboro Aquatic Center\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ncaaorg.s3.amazonaws.com\/championships\/sports\/swimdive\/d1\/2021-22D1XSW_ChampionshipsDatesandSites.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">will host the women\u2019s championships<\/a>\u00a0from March 17-20. The targeted goal is for athletes to compete across the country in Beaverton, Ore.; Des Moines, Iowa; Greensboro, N.C.; Huntsville, Ala.; Indianapolis, Ind.; Irvine, Calif.; Richmond, Va.; San Antonio, Texas; and Sarasota, Fla.<\/p>\n<p>While the tentpole fall event has traditionally featured 700-800 athletes in one location, the multi-site Toyota US Open, which will consist of four-timed finals sessions and both a women\u2019s and men\u2019s flight per session, will allow for more than 1,800 athletes to compete asynchronously from coast to coast. It delayed a decision on the fate of spring sports. It follows the model of NESCAC\u2019s actions in July,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/division-iii-nescac-follows-ivy-leagues-lead-and-cancels-fall-sports-for-upcoming-school-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">when it postponed the fall season<\/a>\u00a0but deferred a decision on the winter. The statement does, however, leave open the door for some competition outside of the conference at the discretion of individual schools.<\/p>\n<p>Citing students\u2019 delayed returns to campus for the spring semester due to caution over the COVID-19 pandemic and limits on travel and campus visitors already in place due to coronavirus, the presidents decided that it would be too onerous to conduct a sports season. But a Chinese official has gone on record saying such tests won\u2019t factor into qualification for the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Li Jianming<\/strong>, the deputy director of the General Administration of Sport of China, told the media Saturday that the tests won\u2019t affect who goes to the Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not a fundamental change to the competition rules of the event, nor will it affect the selection of high-level athletes for the Olympic Games and international competitions,\u201d Li said,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/sport\/china\/article\/3104980\/tokyo-2020-physical-tests-will-not-decide-chinas-olympic-athletes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according to the\u00a0<em>South China Morning Post<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Swimmers with times worthy of finals in certain events were denied spots at the National Swimming Championships. Among the aggrieved were\u00a0<strong>Wang Jianjiahe,<\/strong>\u00a0who set an Asian record in the women\u2019s 1,500 freestyle (15:45.59), and\u00a0<strong>Yu Hexin,<\/strong>\u00a0who set a national record in the men\u2019s 50 free (21.79).
