But a Chinese official has gone on record saying such tests won\u2019t factor into qualification for the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Li Jianming<\/strong>, the deputy director of the General Administration of Sport of China, told the media Saturday that the tests won\u2019t affect who goes to the Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not a fundamental change to the competition rules of the event, nor will it affect the selection of high-level athletes for the Olympic Games and international competitions,\u201d Li said, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/sport\/china\/article\/3104980\/tokyo-2020-physical-tests-will-not-decide-chinas-olympic-athletes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according to the <em>South China Morning Post<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Swimmers with times worthy of finals in certain events were denied spots at the National Swimming Championships. Among the aggrieved were <strong>Wang Jianjiahe,<\/strong> who set an Asian record in the women\u2019s 1,500 freestyle (15:45.59), and <strong>Yu Hexin,<\/strong> who set a national record in the men\u2019s 50 free (21.79). The <em>SCMP<\/em> also cites <strong>Ye Shiwen<\/strong> and <strong>Fu Yuanhui<\/strong> as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/sport\/china\/article\/3103448\/social-media-outrage-china-swim-stars-fall-foul-physical-tests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">also excluded from finals<\/a>, apparently by poor fitness-test results, as well as <strong>Xu Jiayu <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/xu-jiayu-checks-in-with-200-back-win-at-chinese-nationals-qualifying-affected-by-controversial-fitness-testing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in the 200 backstroke<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Those tests, according to national news agency Xinhua, consisted of \u201cvertical jumps, 30-metre sprints, pull-ups, trunk muscle strength training, and 3,000-metre runs\u201d and stretched over two days.<\/p>\n<p>Wang was one of the swimmers who publicly criticized the selection criteria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not like we\u2019re overlooking the importance of physical strength,\u201d she told media at Nationals. \u201cI think deciding the top eight based on physical tests is somewhat deficient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Li, a former water polo player, said the fitness tests were temporary, contradicting messaging from <strong>Zhou Jihong,<\/strong> the president of the Chinese Swimming Association.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is just a temporary measure to force athletes to pay attention to strengthening basic physical training,\u201d Li said. \u201cOf course, this measure needs to be more scientific.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Li also casually mentioned the difference between fit for swimming and fit in a general sense as being occasionally different.
