THE No. 4-ranked Stanford women's team completed a split of a two-day double-dual meet at the Avery Aquatic Center on Saturday, falling to defending national champion and No. 1 Auburn (202.5-129.5) while defeating Pacific (201-121). Auburn also defeated Pacific (214-106). T

he loss to Auburn ended Stanford's string of 15 consecutive dual meet victories. Auburn's overall record improves to 2-0, while Stanford is now 3-1 and Pacific falls to 2-3.

"When you compete against a great opponent, you have to be hitting on all cylinders to have an opportunity to win," said Stanford head coach Richard Quick.
"Auburn was hitting on all cylinders the past two days."

Tara Kirk, Kristen Caverly and Dana Kirk all won individual events for the Cardinal. Tara Kirk picked up a victory in the 200 breast by recording an NCAA "A' qualifying time of 2:10.92, fastest in the nation this year.

Caverly swam a tremendous 200 IM, racing American record holder and 2002 NCAA champion Maggie Bowen of Auburn to a dead heat in an NCAA "A " time of 1:59.88. Dana Kirk picked up her first individual collegiate win with a time of 2:00.43 in the 200 fly.

"Tara Kirk swam a truly outstanding 200 breast and is quite a bit ahead of where she was at this point last year," said Quick. "For Kristen Caverly to tie the American record holder in the 200 IM was a very significant performance and Dana Kirk is going to be a great swimmer. I am pleased with her progress so far."

Auburn secured its win over Stanford with victories in the first four events of the day.

In the opening 200 medley relay, Auburn (1:42.49) edged second-place Stanford (1:42.88) with a winning team of Erin Volcan, Laura Swander, Margaret Hoelzer and Heather Kemp.

Magda Dyszkiewicz kept the Tigers' momentum rolling by recording an NCAA "A" mark to win the 1650 free (16:19.47).

Hoelzer followed with another NCAA "A" time of 1:57.41 to win the 200 back and Volcan added an NCAA "A" mark of 1:57.51 to finish second.

Kemp then won the 100 free (50.41) before Tara Kirk's victory in the 200 breast finally stopped the streak. Kemp added another victory in the 200 free (1:48.90).

Auburn also won the final event of the day as a team of Volcan, Bowen, Kirsty Coventry and Kemp captured the 400 free relay.

Kemp finished the two-day meet with a total of seven wins – three in individual events and as part of four relay squads.

Pacific had a pair of third-place individual
