She shares the award with <strong>Reinhard Genzel<\/strong> and <strong>Roger Penrose.<\/strong> She\u2019s just the fourth woman to win a Nobel Prize in physics, joining <strong>Marie Curie<\/strong> (1903), <strong>Maria Goeppert Mayer<\/strong> (1963) and <strong>Donna Strickland<\/strong> (2018).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard the news with a phone call at 2 in the morning, so I was fast asleep,\u201d Ghez said in an interview conducted with The Nobel Prize\u2019s Adam Smith. \u201cAnd I think for the first few minutes I thought I was dreaming. I still can\u2019t quite believe it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to her research, Ghez is a Masters swimmer with UCLA Bruin Masters. A native of New York City, she studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and got her Ph.D. at California Institute of Technology. She\u2019s a member of the faculty at UCLA.<\/p>\n<p>Her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/2020\/10\/06\/3-scientists-share-nobel-physics-prize-for-cosmology-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fellow honoree<\/a> Genzel, formerly of the University of California Berkeley, was a national-team level javelin thrower in West Germany in the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p>Swimming is part of Ghez\u2019s approach to studies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do it to keep my head screwed on straight and to meet people who don&#8217;t think about science all day long,\u201d Ghez said in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.math.stonybrook.edu\/posterproject\/biographies\/ghez.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an interview with The Poster Project<\/a>. \u201cIt keeps things in my life balanced.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Andrea Ghez, one of three recipients of the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics, is a distinguished Masters swimmer in California.
