The school announced at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/william-mary-to-cut-swimming-diving-after-2020-21-season\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">beginning of September<\/a> that it was cutting men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s swimming &amp; diving, men\u2019s and women\u2019s gymnastics, men\u2019s indoor and outdoor track &amp; field, and women\u2019s volleyball after the 2020-21 school year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jeremy Martin\u00a0<\/strong>is stepping in as interim Athletic Director in the wake of Huge&#8217;s resignation.<\/p>\n<p>The news comes after Huge admitted to plagiarizing passages verbatim in the announcement from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/stanford-cutting-11-sports-after-2020-21-year-including-synchronized-swimming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stanford&#8217;s announcement<\/a> of cutting 11 programs.\u00a0118 student-athletes and 13 coaches had been affected by William &amp; Mary&#8217;s decision and the school was estimating it would save $3.66 million.<\/p>\n<p>William &amp; Mary men\u2019s swimming has won six straight conference titles in the Colonial Athletic Association, as this past season culminated with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/colin-wright-put-william-mary-on-map-with-first-ncaa-qualification-in-decades\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colin Wright<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>making the NCAA Championships in the 50, 100 &amp; 200 freestyle, becoming the first William &amp; Mary swimmer since 1963 to make the meet. On the women\u2019s side, the Tribe finished second at this year\u2019s CAA Championships as they last won the title in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/william-mary-save-william-mary-athletics?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> petition was started<\/a> to save William &amp; Mary Swimming &amp; Diving and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/commentary-the-loss-of-william-mary-swimming-is-a-loss-of-family\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">many alums<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/tyler-fenwick-issues-heartfelt-message-on-william-mary-cut\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">have spoken out<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/save-tribe-swimming-creates-music-video-to-ask-athletic-director-to-reverse-decision\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on their disappointment<\/a> over the decision.<\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Sources: William &amp; Mary AD Samantha Huge is resigning in wake of protests over cutting of seven Tribe sports.
