Virginia Tech is third (477).

Michigan's Lady Wolverines actually had more individual winners this evening (three to UNC's two) but Carolina scored much deeper. The maize and blue also won a relay as did UNC.

Coach Jim Richardson's Michigan women got the proceedings underway with a meet-record in the 200 medley relay, racing to a 1:41.47-1:44.00 win over host Carolina. The time is an NCAA "B" cut too.

The Wolverines got a strong leadoff leg from Erin Abbey, who clocked 25.86 for her 50 leadoff. Kelli Stein followed with a 28.39 breast leg, Anne Weilbacher added a quick 24.30 fly leg and anchor Laura Kaznecki brought home the win in 22.92.

Carolina's Christy Watkins, who set a meet-record last evening en route to the 50 free title (22.49, NCAA auto) anchored in 22.64, fastest split of the race.

Her teammate, Becky Acker, added a gold in the 400 IM 4:20.52-4:24.32 win over Kansas' Gwen Haley.

Mihcigan came back to capture the 100 fly as Weilbacher touched in an NCAA "B" cut of 54.20, just off the "A" standard of 54.14 and also just off her pr of 54.13 from last season's NCAAs. South Carolina's Diane Parker, 200 IM champ, was runner-up (pr 54.98) and she too makes the NCAA "B" standard.

Now it was time for Carolina junior Jessi Perruquet to steal the limelight, and she didn't disappoint. The 'Heels' record-holder in the 200 free and defending Atlantic Coast Conference champ, JP won her specialty in 1:46.40, an NCAA auto cut and just .16 off her meet-record 1:46.24 from last season.

But she wasn't alone in the pool as Michigan sophomore Amy McCullough also made the NCAA auto-standard with her excellent pr 1:46.89, good for the silver. The Wolverine record is 1:46.37 by former Canadian Olympian Shannon Shakespeare, who swam that time two seasons ago.

Perruquet's pr is 1:45.65 from last season's NCAAs and that time ranks her second on the all-time ACC list to Clemson's Mitzi Kremer's 1:44.78. Kremer swam that time en route to the NCAA title 13 years ago in Indianapolis.

Stein then added the 100 breast gold to her resume with an NCAA "B" cut 1:02.26, and teammate Erin Abbey followed suit in the 100 back (55.17).

UNC's 7:22.95 to win the 800 free relay was good for a "B" cut as was Michigan's runner-up 7:24.03.

*   *   *    *    *

On the men's side, Virginia Tech, swimming quite well and showing unexpected talent on both sides of the aisle, had a pair of winners. Freshman Anderse Fraha went a solid 48.99 to win the 100 fly over LSU's Mike Totautas (49.03); and soph Kevin Furlong won the 100 breast with a Hokie record 54.51.

Fraha's time is just off the NCAA "B" standard of 48.74. Furlong's swim is just off the NCAA "A" standard (54.30) but well within the"B" cut, as was runner-up Andrew Bree of Tennessee (54.99). Bree won the 200 IM opening night (1:49.94).

UNC's highest male finisher was distance specialist Yuri Suguiyama, who took runner-up honors in the 200 free to Kentucky freshman Steve Manley (1:37.91 to 1:38.82). The Tar Heel junior was also second in the 500 free.

This latter race was won by Vol freshman Casey Dauw in a pr 4:22+, a cool four seconds faster than his old prep pr.

So what did Dauw do for an encore? How 'bout winning the 400 IM tonight in a pr 3:50.92 to South Carolina's Joey Faltraco's 3:52.49. Dauw had never been under 3:57.0 before this evening.

If he continues improving s he has here, his coach, Vol boss John Trembley, will soon be drummed right off the coaches' sprint club "honor roll" and out of the "Hall of Fame!"

The final individual race, the 100 back, went to LSU's Evan Martinec (48.05). He holds the Tiger school-record at47.31 from last season's NCAAs. His winning time was not far off the auto cut of 47.72.

Tennessee's 6:35.32 to win the 800 free relay was good for a "B" cut and Dauw's 1:37.39 leadoff leg gave him his third pr of the meet.

— Bill Bell

TEAM SCORES

WOMEN: 1.
