{"id":447978,"date":"2020-09-29T13:41:53","date_gmt":"2020-09-29T20:41:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=447978"},"modified":"2020-09-29T13:41:53","modified_gmt":"2020-09-29T20:41:53","slug":"janet-evans-jamal-hill-headline-first-annual-swim-up-hill-virtual-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/janet-evans-jamal-hill-headline-first-annual-swim-up-hill-virtual-event\/","title":{"rendered":"Janet Evans, Jamal Hill Headline First Annual Swim Up Hill Virtual Event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Para swimmer <strong>Jamal Hill,<\/strong> the founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimuphill.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Swim Up Hill<\/a>, and <strong>Janet Evans<\/strong> headlined the organization\u2019s first annual event, a virtual happening that brought together more than 40 aquatic community leaders in the Los Angeles area.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/news-release\/2020\/09\/29\/2100661\/0\/en\/Jamal-Hill-and-the-Swim-Up-Hill-Organization-Champion-Swim-Education-as-Human-Right-through-Air-B-B.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">theme of the first event<\/a> was \u201cBuilding a More Inclusive Waterscape.\u201d Hill, who is aspiring to earn a place in the 2021 Tokyo Paralympics, founded Swim Up Hill with the goal of teaching one million people to swim, with an emphasis on communities of color like the one he grew up in in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>The event, held Sept. 24, featured representatives from USA Swimming, Airbnb, the Los Angeles 2028 Organizing Committee, Nike Swim, Procter &amp; Gamble and the Boys &amp; Girls Club of America, among other local businesses, nonprofits and educational institutions. Representatives from several California cities, including Carson, Lynwood and Culver City, also attended. Swim Up Hill will provide video of the presentations on its website and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCejzzOg2P3yNrOBymOxdCmA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">YouTube channel<\/a> in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Speakers at the event included Evans, the four-time Olympic gold medalist and the Chief Athletic Officer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/janet-evans-nominated-for-fina-bureau\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">of the LA28 Organizing Committee<\/a>; mental skills coach <strong>Wilma Wong;<\/strong> and Hill, 25, a member of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/anthony-ervin-three-para-swimmers-on-team-usa-council-on-racial-and-social-justice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Team USA\u2019s Council on Racial and Social Justice<\/a> and part of this summer\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/swimmers-for-change-announces-show-schedule-as-group-aims-to-raise-awareness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Swimmers for Change campaign<\/a>. Their talks discussed strategies to standardize and create sustainable swimming education practices, developmental programs for coaches and officials, and \u201cbuild momentum into the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games\u201d in L.A. Hill\u2019s organization has created the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airbnb.com\/experiences\/1718675\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Splash at Home program<\/a> to teach in-home water safety remotely as an Airbnb experience.<\/p>\n<p>Hill, who studied physics at Hiram College and was diagnosed at age 23 with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, has represented the U.S. in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamusa.org\/para-swimming\/athletes\/Jamal-Hill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">para swimming since 2018<\/a>. He\u2019s spent the last two years collecting data on learn-to-swim efforts to develop curriculum that is accessible to coaches and novices alike. \u201cOur goal was to bring ideas to the community that brought us to the edge of our comfort zones and pushed us to think about things in a different way,\u201d Hill said in his talk.<\/p>\n<p>Wong\u2019s talk, \u201cUnderdogs (In Real Life),\u201d involved dealing with adversity and how to see setbacks as opportunities to imagine new solutions, collaborate and change. Evans\u2019 \u201cInvesting in A Beautiful Future\u201d presentation outlined public and private investments across Los Angeles ahead of the 2028 Olympics, especially as they pertain to aquatic
