The four members are\u00a0<strong>Sage Ohlensehlen<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Christina Kaufman<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Alexa Puccini<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Kelsey Drake<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>They are challenging the University&#8217;s &#8220;failure to provide equitable athletic opportunities for its female students and equitable treatment of female student athletes, including the University&#8217;s announced elimination of a viable female sports team, with a venerable history and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/new-facebook-group-started-for-iowa-swimming-diving-alumni-to-save-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">strong public support<\/a>&#8221; as outlined in the court document.<\/p>\n<p>The legal challenge is advanced under Title IX of the federal Education Amendments of 1972.<\/p>\n<p>The swimmers contend that the elimination of this sport violates their rights, and the rights of other student-athletes similarly-situated, under that law.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/results\/pdf\/iowa-swimming-and-diving-complaint-ncaa-college-2020-09-25.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Read the full court document here.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Iowa stated the lack of football revenue was the reason, but now football is back and university officials have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/university-of-iowa-not-budging-on-return-of-swimming-despite-footballs-return\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">not reversed course<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Iowa\u2019s women\u2019s team was ninth at Big Ten\u2019s this year out of 13 teams as no women\u2019s team in the Big Ten, besides the University of Maryland, has cut women\u2019s swimming, making this decision a truly historical one.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Iowa is also scheduled to host the upcoming men\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ncaa-announces-sites-for-future-swimming-championships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NCAA Division I swimming and diving championships in 2021<\/a>\u00a0as their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hawkeyesports.com\/campus-recreation-and-wellness-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">world class facility<\/a> first opened its doors in the summer of 2010 and has hosted the 2015 men&#8217;s NCAAs as well as five Big Ten championships \u2013 three men and two women.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Iowa qualified four swimmers to the 2020 NCAA championships before the meet was cancelled to slow down COVID-19 \u2013 two from each team. Senior\u00a0<strong>Hannah Burvill\u00a0<\/strong>qualified in the 200 free along with junior\u00a0<strong>Kelsey Drake\u00a0<\/strong>(200 butterfly), sophomore\u00a0<strong>Anze Fers Erzen\u00a0<\/strong>(200 back) and junior\u00a0<strong>Daniel Swanepoel\u00a0<\/strong>(200 breaststroke).<\/p>\n<p>The Hawkeye women finished as high as second at the 1986 Big Ten Championships in a tie with Minnesota as the Hawkeye men first started competing at the Big Ten Championships in 1919. The Iowa men celebrated conference titles in 1936, 1981 and 1982 as they were a consistent top five team from 1978 \u2013 1996 under coach\u00a0<strong>Glenn Patton<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>During his tenure, Patton coached\u00a0<strong>Artur Wojdat\u00a0<\/strong>to nine individual NCAA titles, including four straight in the 500 from 1989 \u2013 1992. He also won the 1650 three times from 1990 \u2013 1992 and the 200 free in 1989 and 1991.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_444582\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-444582\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\n<\/div>\n<p>Patton also coached\u00a0<strong>Rafal Szukala\u00a0<\/strong>to national titles in the 100 fly in 1994 and 200 fly in 1992 as he was the last individual national champion for the University of Iowa in swimming and diving.<\/p>\n<p>On the women\u2019s side, Iowa won 14 individual events at the Big Ten Championships, with the last coming from\u00a0<strong>Becky Stoughton\u00a0<\/strong>in the 1650 in 2015, as well as the 800 free relay in 1986.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Four members of the University of Iowa women&#8217;s swimming and diving team are challenging the University&#8217;s announcement to cut the swimming and diving program &#8211;
