{"id":447472,"date":"2020-09-24T11:26:04","date_gmt":"2020-09-24T18:26:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=447472"},"modified":"2020-09-24T11:26:04","modified_gmt":"2020-09-24T18:26:04","slug":"big-ten-conference-to-not-hold-swim-meets-until-after-january-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/big-ten-conference-to-not-hold-swim-meets-until-after-january-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Big Ten Conference to Not Hold Swim Meets Until After January 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Big Ten Conference Administrator&#8217;s Council has determined that with the exception of football, men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s basketball, and men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s ice hockey, there shall be no competition prior to January 1, 2021, in an email to swim and dive coaches obtained by <em>Swimming World<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Administrators Council has determined that with the exception of football, men\u2019s and women\u2019s basketball and perhaps men\u2019s ice hockey (and women\u2019s ice hockey for those schools that sponsor it), there shall be no competition prior to January 1<sup>st<\/sup>,&#8221; the email states.<\/p>\n<p>The Big Ten is the second power five Division I conference to make a decision regarding a <a href=\"https:\/\/bigten.org\/index.aspx?path=mswim\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">swimming and diving season<\/a>, after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sec-announces-new-swimming-season-dates-with-october-start\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Southeastern Conference<\/a> announced they would only hold dual meets and no conference championship as of yet. There has been no indication on what the meets will entail in terms of spectator attendance and lane restrictions, or if teams will be limited on where they can travel.<\/p>\n<p>The Big Ten Conference recently became the fourth power five conference to move forward with a condensed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/big-ten-conference-expected-to-return-to-football-in-october-what-it-might-mean-for-swimming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">conference-only football season<\/a>, following the lead from the SEC, ACC and Big 12, with decisions regarding the other sports seasons coming shortly. The Pac-12, which houses premiere swimming and diving teams Stanford, Cal, and Southern Cal, has made an agreement with\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.quidel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Quidel Corporation<\/a> to allow for daily COVID testing, and could return to competition sooner than the original January 1 date.<\/p>\n<p>There is still no word on if the NCAA championships will proceed as scheduled in March, but with the Big Ten only proceeding with meets starting in January, it could hinder the post-season. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/missouri-valley-conference-to-hold-swimming-diving-championships-in-mid-april-dates-not-finalized\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Missouri Valley Conference<\/a> has indicated they will hold a conference championship meet in April, which would likely leave those swimmers out of contention to make NCAAs.
