COVID Ban For Auckland Swimmers With Anxious Wait To Hear Of Change In Restrictions<\/strong><\/p>\n

Auckland\u2019s 200-strong qualifiers for the Aon 2020 NZ Short Course Championships<\/strong><\/a>, face a desperate wait to see if they will be allowed to contest next month\u2019s titles in Hamilton.<\/p>\n

Only a decision by the New Zealand government to drop Auckland from a Level 2 to a Level 1 COVID-19 restrictions<\/a> will give the group any chance of swimming on the last two days of the meet which will run across five days from Tuesday October 6-10.<\/p>\n

With\u00a0the\u00a0government\u00a0updating\u00a0Auckland\u2019s Alert Level\u00a0on\u00a0Monday October 5 and\u00a0the likelihood that Auckland\u2019s Level restriction will drop to Level 1 at 11.59 pm on Wednesday 7 October,\u00a0Aucklanders will be welcome to compete in the events they have entered in from Thursday onwards should the Alert Level\u00a0drop to Level 1.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe deeply regret the need to exclude Aucklanders from (hopefully) the first two days of the event but we simply cannot operate the event in accordance with Hamilton City Councils requirements, with a large number of Aucklanders entered,\u201d NZ CEO Steve Johns<\/strong> said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe hope that if Auckland moves to Level 1 on Wednesday October 7, we will look forward to seeing Aucklanders racing from Thursday the 8th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n

\u201cSwimming New Zealand is extremely disappointed that we have been forced to make the difficult decision to not permit swimmers from within the Auckland City boundary\u00a0(the Auckland and Counties swimming regions) \u00a0whilst the Auckland region remains in Level 2 restrictions.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had\u00a0originally received approval last week for the\u00a0Event Management Plan to host the event with Aucklanders attending safely, housed outside in multiple marquees\u00a0of up to 100 each.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever,\u00a0this week, the Hamilton City Council has adjusted\u00a0its\u00a0interpretation of the Level 2 restrictions for Aucklanders and is now restricting the\u00a0total<\/u>\u00a0number of Aucklanders allowed on-site to 100 per session.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have\u00a0considered all possible options to continue hosting the event with Aucklanders competing, but\u00a0given the stringent restrictions now put in place,\u00a0this is no longer possible.<\/p>\n

Therefore, Auckland swimmers will no longer be able to compete at the event while Auckland is under a Level 2 restriction.\u201d<\/p>\n

There are currently 213\u00a0Auckland swimmers entered\u00a0plus coaches and managers, so close to 300 Aucklanders in total.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
