Day One of the FINA World Cup in East Meadow, N.Y., saw one World, three American and six U.S. Open records fall on Friday at
the Nassau County Aquatic Center.

Natalie Coughlin, who last summer became the first woman to crack the one-minute barrier in the long course 100 meter backstroke, showcased her versatility by breaking the world record tonight in the short course 100 meter butterfly.

The 20 year-old Coughlin, a student at the University of California, clocked 56.34 seconds to set a new global standard in the 100m fly.

Coughlin earned her record, beating the two previous world record-holders in the event, Slovakia's Martina Moravcova and the USA's Jenny Thompson, who was second tonight in 57.20.

Coughlin had three wins on the night. She set an American record in the 50m backstroke with a time of 27.08 seconds and won the 200m backstroke in 2:05.76, less than two seconds off her own global standard.

"I didn't expect that at all," said Coughlin about her world record swim. "My 100 fly has been feeling a lot better the past month or so. My goal was to come back on the second 50 and work the second half of the race. I just wanted to stick with everyone."

Coughlin faced stiff competition in the 100m fly field, which included Jenny Thompson and Martina Moravcova. Moravcova, of Slovakia, was the former World
and World Cup record-holder; Thompson, the former American and U.S. Open record-holder. Thompson is in her second year of medical school, training in her spare time.

"I knew the race would be between one of us," Coughlin said. "I knew I had to take the race seriously because they did. We all swam great times, especially Jenny. She's just amazing, considering what she's juggling right now."

In the 50m back, Coughlin won the event for the second year in a row. Teammate Haley Cope, who finished second, was the former American-record holder. Cope won the event last week at the World Cup stop in Rio.

Jason Lezak swam his way to the U.S. Open record in the 100m free, grabbing first place in 47.32. Lezak, who won the event at this meet last year, broke Anthony Ervin's U.S. Open record set in 2000.

"I'm excited about getting the U.S. Open record," Lezak said. "I knew after my morning swim that I would have a good swim, but I wasn't sure how fast. I had a feeling I'd need to go in the 47 range. It was a little faster than I expected."

In the 50m free, Thompson broke her own American record with a time of 24.52, good for second place. Alison Sheppard of Great Britain touched just in front of her, breaking Thompson's old U.S. Open record with a time of 24.49. Therese Alshammar of Sweden, the world record-holder, took third.

"I had no expectation of setting any record," Thompson said. "When I heard the announcer say it, I was really surprised. It was a close race. I was just excited to come to a swim meet and race the Europeans. I'm psyched all of the best sprinters in the world were here, especially since I probably won't get to race the Europeans until World Championships."

Two other swimmers set U.S. Open records on the day. James Hickman of Great Britain broke Tom Malchow's U.S. Open record in the 200m fly with a winning time of 1:53.18. In the 800m free, Flavia Rigamonti of Switzerland and SMU won the event in 8:17.28.

FINA WORLD CUP 2002-2003
FINAL RESULTS
2ND MEET
NASSAU, N.Y.<br
