From UT – COLLEGE STATION, TX – The No. 3 ranked University of Texas men’s swimming and diving team won four of eight events on Friday night to extend its lead over second-place Nebraska to 617-468.5 after the second of three days at the 1998 Big 12 Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship at the Student Recreation Center Natatorium. <\/p>\n
Freshman Nate Dusing (Villa Hills, Ky.), swimming unshaved, won the 100-yard butterfly with a career-best time and NCAA automatic standard of 47.03, breaking the school record he set on Dec. 5, 1997 (47.15). Dusing defeated the 1997 NCAA Championship runner-up and defending Big 12 Champion, Nebraska’s Adam Pine, who was second with a time of 47.18. It was Dusing’s second individual win of the championship meet, as he recorded a victory in the 200-yard individual medley on Thursday night. Senior Steve Martyak (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) was third with a career-best time and NCAA automatic standard of 47.58. <\/p>\n
The Longhorns recorded a 1-2-3-4 finish in the 100-yard backstroke, as senior Neil Walker (Verona, Wis.) led the way with a first-place time and NCAA automatic standard of 47.22. Freshman Matt Ulrickson (Scottsdale, Ariz.) was second with a 48.71, senior Carlos Arena (Mexico City, Mexico) was third with a 48.94, and Martyak was fourth with a 49.24.
