THE University of Minnesota swimming and diving teams wrapped up their training trip to Hawaii with a sweep of the University of Hawaii on Saturday. With the win, the Gopher women are now 6-0 in dual meets this season, while the men are now 5-1.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Minnesota Women&#8217;s Press Release<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The training from this year&#8217;s trip to Hawaii seemed to work well for the Gophers as they took on the University of Hawaii Saturday in Honolulu. The University of Minnesota women&#8217;s swimming and diving team stay undefeated with this non-conference win improving to a 6-0 record, with a 3-0 record in the Big Ten.<\/p>\n<p>The women&#8217;s team beat Hawaii in a near sweep, winning 13-14 events (diving was not contested).<\/p>\n<p>The day&#8217;s competition started out strong for Minnesota with a win in the 200-yard medley relay, nabbing first (1:44.35), third, and fourth place times.<\/p>\n<p>The Gopher women then took over the 1000-yard freestyle with Kiera Janzen claiming first with a time of 9:59.43 followed by Breanne Siwicki (10:11.44) in second place, and Samantha Harding (10:12.03) taking third.<\/p>\n<p>With Kiera Janzen securing distance freestyle wins, Lauren Votava won both shorter distance swims with a 1:48.64 in the 200-yard free and a 50.40 in the 100-yard freestyle. Erin Caflisch placing first in the 50-yard free with a 24.12 followed by Abi Raatz solidified Minnesota&#8217;s strength over Hawaii in freestyle.<\/p>\n<p>Senior Tess Behrens won both the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke with times of 57.03 and 2:05.03. Kierra Smith did the same, winning both breaststroke events with a 1:05.03 in the 100-yard and a 2:17.28 in the 200-yard event.<\/p>\n<p>The Gophers were only surpassed by Hawaii in the 200 freestyle relay at the end of the meet.<\/p>\n<p>The women&#8217;s swim and dive take on North Carolina State next on both January 24th at 6:00pm and January 25th at 10:00am at the University Aquatic Center. Note that Friday January 24th is the annual &#8220;Pack the Pool&#8221; event, make sure to join us for a fun home meet featuring free admission, Goldy, face-painting and a free t-shirt to the first 100 fans!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Minnesota Men&#8217;s Press Release<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The University of Minnesota men\u2019s swim team defeated the Rainbow Warriors yesterday, January 11, in Honolulu. This improves the team\u2019s record to 5-1, with their only loss being against Florida earlier this season.<\/p>\n<p>Minnesota won 13 of 14 events, as did the women\u2019s team (diving was not contested).<\/p>\n<p>Freshman Daryl Turner won a pair of gold-place finishes in both the 100-yard back with a time of 49.54 and an impressive 100-yard freestyle with a time of 44.91 over senior captain Derek Toomey who snagged second with a 45.32. Toomey won the 50-yard freestyle with a 20.32.<\/p>\n<p>Kyler Van Swol also snagged first place in two individual events, the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:38.39 and the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 48.56.<\/p>\n<p>CJ Smith, distance freestyler, won the 1000-yard free with a 9:15.68 and the 500-yard free with a 4:32.82. The<\/p>\n<p>Gophers only allowed a first place spot, and event win taken away from them in the 100-yard breaststroke, however Minnesota managed to nab both second and third place by Nick Hatanaka (who took first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:05.29) and Spencer Mattox.<\/p>\n<p>The Men\u2019s swim and dive take on North Carolina State next on both January 24th at 6:00pm and January 25th at 10:00am at the University Aquatic Center. Note that Friday January 24th is the annual \u201cPack the Pool\u201d event, make sure to join us for a fun home meet featuring free admission, Goldy, face-painting and a free t-shirt to the first 100 fans!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hawaii Press Release<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The University of Hawai&#8217;i men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s swim teams competed in their final regular season meet on Saturday, falling to Minnesota on senior day at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8216;Bows dominated several events but Paulo de Paula gave UH its only first place finish. He took top honors in the men&#8217;s 100 breaststroke with a time of 56:53.<\/p>\n<p>Karl-Richard Hennebach had a pair of sliver finishes for the Rainbow Warriors, placing second in the 50 free (21:05) and 100 fly (49:50). Victor Goicoechea finished second in the 1000 free (9:21.99) and Yuri Samouilich did the same in the 200 free (1:39.32).<\/p>\n<p>Madi Uekawa had a solid showing in the women&#8217;s 100 backstroke, placing second with a time of 1:06.32.<\/p>\n<p>The most success of the day came in the men&#8217;s 100 fly, 400 IM, and 500 free. Hawai&#8217;i accounted for four of the top five finishers in each event.<br \/>\nWith the regular season completed, the &#8216;Bows now turn their attention to the MPSF Swimming Championships.
