THE Wisconsin men\u2019s and women\u2019s swimming and diving teams signed 10 swimmers to national letters of intent during the November early signing period, according to head coach Eric Hansen. The 10 new Badgers, four men and six women, will join the squad in 2003.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are real pleased with our recruiting class and we\u2019ll continue to add a few more in the spring,\u201d Hansen said. <\/p>\n<p>On the men\u2019s side, the Badgers gain Matt Bonzer (Grand Forks, N.D.), Scott Speer (Fitchburg, Wis.), Chris Scheuber (Papillion, Neb.) and Darren Volle (Springfield, Ill.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are going to add some strength and power in Darren Volle, Chris Scheuber and Scott Speer.  All are accomplished 50 and 100 sprinters and we\u2019re looking to add some depth to that,\u201d Hansen said. \u201cMatt Bonzer is an IMer who we think can develop into something special.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bonzer hails from Central High School and Volle is a high school All-American and two-time all-state from Springfield High School.  Scheuber and Speer are state champions in the 100 freestyle at Papillion-Lavista and Madison West, respectively. Scheuber is also a<br \/>\ntwo-time Nebraska state champion in the 50 free.<\/p>\n<p>On the women\u2019s side, the Badgers add Caroline Ackley (Raleigh, N.C.), Susan Johnson (Toledo, Ohio), Sierra Lewis (Bend, Ore.), Amanda Rice (Jacksonville, Fla.), Tina Wanezek (Brookfield, Wis.) and Andrea Wiesner<br \/>\n(Montrose, Colo.). Johnson, Lewis and Rice are senior national qualifiers from Notre Dame Academy, The Bolles School, and Summit High School, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will put [Lewis] to work in the relay spots and also in the 100 and 200 breast. She is a great talent. Amanda Rice is a distance freestyler who we think can really help us out. She will help us with depth in addition to Carly [Piper] and Rebecca Johansson,\u201d Hansen said. \u201cSusan Johnson\u2019s versatility is quite amazing. She will help us reload in the middle distance freestyle.  She will help us in the 400<br \/>\nfree relay and will also help us in the butterfly and backstroke events.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Enloe High School product Ackley and Montrose High Schooler Wiesner are sisters of current men\u2019s swimmers Andrew and Eric, respectively.  Wanezek is the sister of former Badger Andrea Wanezek. Wanezek recently<br \/>\ntook third in the 100 fly at the Wisconsin state meet swimming for Brookfield East. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are excited to have [Wanezek] and she has proven to be very successful in the fly events. Ackley comes to us as a substantial contributor in the middle distance freestyles. Andrea Wiesner is an amazing talent who we feel can help us in the IMs,\u201d Hansen said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe combination of Andrea Wiesner, Anna Trinidad, Emily Pisula, and Bethany Pendleton should really make us a threat in the IM events.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MADISON, Wisc., November 21.
