Headwinds at the start registered 24 knots, so severe that a support kayak had to be lifted from the water. She began the swim just before midnight on Sept. 2 beneath a full moon and completed it the following afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt so bad I almost didn\u2019t get into the water, but I made a promise to myself that I would at least try,\u201d Bergman said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newswire.com\/press-release\/swimmer-abby-bergman-is-fourth-person-to-cross-santa-monica-bay-21207878\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in a press release<\/a>. \u201cAs soon as I hit the water I felt better, and after about an hour of swimming, I was really having fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The crossing is reportedly just the fourth recorded <a href=\"https:\/\/easyreadernews.com\/former-titan-to-swim-across-santa-monica-bay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">solo crossing of Santa Monica Bay<\/a>. The swim is awaiting ratification from the Marathon Swimming Federation.<\/p>\n<p>Bergman, 24, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abbybergman.com\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">swam at Smith College in Massachusetts<\/a>. The native of Culver City, Calif., last summer completed the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/open-water-swimmer-abby-bergman-achieves-california-triple-crown-300899709.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">California Triple Crown<\/a>\u201d by swimming Catalina Channel, Santa Barbara Channel and the length of Lake Tahoe, a total of 53.8 miles of swimming. She also made a successful <a href=\"https:\/\/smithpioneers.com\/news\/2017\/8\/2\/swimming-and-diving-abby-bergman-18-completes-crossing-of-the-english-channel.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">crossing of the English Channel in 2017<\/a>. Bergman, who works as a research professional at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, <a href=\"https:\/\/abbygirlrose.wordpress.com\/2020\/09\/04\/3512\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">documented her journey via her blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>(Full disclosure: Bergman served as a Swimming World college intern and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/author\/abby-bergman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">has contributed several articles to Swimming World<\/a>.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs much as I was ready to be done when I finished I could have kept swimming for several hours if I had needed to and I\u2019m really really proud of that,\u201d Bergman wrote. \u201cMost of all I\u2019m really proud that as terrible as I was feeling on the boat I still hopped in the water and gave the swim a try.
