But instead Smith is at her home in Minnesota, taking online classes from Normandale Community College at her mother&#8217;s dining room table to keep her brain stimulated as she has deferred her enrollment to Stanford ahead of a new Olympic year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m just trying to go with the flow,\u201d Regan Smith said to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.startribune.com\/regan-smith-world-champion-lakeville-swimmer-making-alternate-plans-for-education-olympic-training\/572343072\/?refresh=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Star Tribune <\/em><\/a>in Minnesota. \u201cIt would be easy to be angry, but so many people are in the same boat as me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text_Body\">\u201cIt\u2019s unfortunate, and things are definitely weird. Photo Courtesy: @regansmith4<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Smith made the decision to defer her enrollment to Stanford earlier this summer as she will be training one more year for\u00a0<strong>Mike Parratto<\/strong> at the Riptide Swim Team. Parratto famously coached four-time Olympian\u00a0<strong>Jenny Thompson\u00a0<\/strong>during her club career in New Hampshire as Smith&#8217;s accomplishments in the pool (two world records plus a U.S. national title) earned him USA Swimming&#8217;s coach of the year award at the Golden Goggles, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/mike-parratto-wins-2019-asca-coach-of-the-year-video-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ASCA coach of the year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is so dedicated to what she does,\u201d Parratto said. \u201cThat hasn\u2019t changed. There have been some speed bumps, but she still has that desire to be as good as she can be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The decision to defer was a difficult one, but one that Smith believes is the right move for her as she trains for what would be her first Olympic Games. Stanford is a member of the Pac-12 Conference, which has canceled all sports until at least January 1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text_Body\">\u201cIt seemed like a very stressful situation to voluntarily put myself in,\u201d Regan Smith said. \u201cThere were fewer variables if I stayed home, and I felt like it would ultimately be better for my training and my well-being.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text_Body\">\u201cIt was hard to tell my teammates, especially my freshman class. We had planned to [start school] together for so long. And I was really nervous to tell Greg, too, but they were all very understanding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Smith will not be the only Stanford freshman sitting out the season, as\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/team-usas-lillie-nordmann-to-defer-enrollment-to-stanford-until-2021-22\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lillie Nordmann<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-champs-medalist-andrei-minakov-to-stay-in-russia-ahead-of-freshman-year-at-stanford\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andrei Minakov<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>will also be staying at home for what would have been their freshman seasons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text_Body\">In the early days of 2020, Smith had the fastest times in the world this year in the 100 back (58.18) and was second in the 200 back (2:05.94) as she was a big favorite to not only make the Olympic team, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/tokyo-vision-regan-smith-headlines-field-in-womens-100-backstroke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">potentially take double gold<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/tokyo-vision-regan-smith-aiming-to-continue-u-s-tradition-in-womens-200-backstroke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in the backstroke events<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For now, Smith has been training at a community pool in Northfield, Minnesota, where the only time slot available would be at 5:30 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the end of August, when it was 55 degrees and pitch black, it wasn\u2019t ideal,\u201d Smith told the <em>Star Tribune<\/em>. \u201cBut in June, when the sun was up, it was awesome.
