{"id":445131,"date":"2020-08-28T17:26:00","date_gmt":"2020-08-29T00:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=445131"},"modified":"2020-08-28T17:26:00","modified_gmt":"2020-08-29T00:26:00","slug":"anthony-ervin-three-para-swimmers-on-team-usa-council-on-racial-and-social-justice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/anthony-ervin-three-para-swimmers-on-team-usa-council-on-racial-and-social-justice\/","title":{"rendered":"Anthony Ervin, Three Para-Swimmers on Team USA Council on Racial and Social Justice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Olympic gold medalist <strong>Anthony Ervin<\/strong> was announced Friday as one of the 44 inaugural members of the Team USA Council on Racial and Social Justice.<\/p>\n<p>The council is a joint effort of the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), the Athletes\u2019 Advisory Council (AAC), national governing bodies\/high performance management organizations (NGB\/HPMO) and U.S. Olympians &amp; Paralympians Association (USOPA). The council is athlete-led and the result of USOPC consultation with athletes, formed to, \u201caddress the rules and systems in the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic movements that create barriers to progress, is committed to working collaboratively to provide solutions and recommendations with the aim of eradicating social injustice and cultivating change through strengthened athlete voices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the past year, it has been heartbreaking to hear how many of our athletes have been deeply affected by racism and discrimination both on and off the field of play,\u201d AAC chair <strong>Han Xiao<\/strong> said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamusa.org\/News\/2020\/August\/28\/USOPC-And-AAC-Convene-Team-USA-Council-On-Racial-And-Social-Justice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in a press release<\/a>. \u201cI am encouraged that we have chosen to acknowledge and address these important issues with the leadership of an inspiring and diverse athlete group.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The group has four main priorities, via Friday\u2019s release, each of which constitutes an eight-member steering committee:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The right to protest and demonstrations, to assess current policies and alternate options.<\/li>\n<li>Athlete voice and advocacy, to empower athlete voices on Team USA platforms.<\/li>\n<li>Institutional awareness and cultural change, to review USOPC and NGB diversity and hiring policies.<\/li>\n<li>Racism and acts of discrimination, to enhance reporting and dispute resolution processes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The steering committees are overseen by an eight-member leadership team. Four \u201cthought leaders\u201d are included in the council, and there is a 26-member strong list of community ambassadors who will liaise the council\u2019s work with individual bodies and athletes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are grateful to this group of athletes and thought leaders who have joined the council, lending their perspective and dedication to help us confront the issues of racism and discrimination in sport and society,\u201d USOPC CEO <strong>Sarah Hirshland<\/strong> said. \u201cIt is important that we continue this work of elevating athlete voices and addressing limitations within our Olympic and Paralympic community. This past week, we witnessed athletes across the country demand change through both words and actions \u2013 showing they are a powerful force in the community. We look forward to coming together as one Team USA to reflect and identify solutions toward meaningful change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Council on Racial and Social Justice includes 23 Team USA athletes, forming the crux of the effort. The steering committee on protests and demonstrations includes thrower<strong> Gwen<\/strong> <strong>Berry<\/strong> and fencer <strong>Race Imbolden,<\/strong> both put on probation for national anthem protests during the 2019 Pan Am games, and <strong>John Carlos,<\/strong> of 1968 Olympic protest fame, as a USOPA alumnus.<\/p>\n<p>Ervin is on the steering committee for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/anthony-ervin-on-olympic-rule-50-thats-not-going-to-fly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">athlete voice and advocacy<\/a> along with para-swimmers <strong>Jamal Hill<\/strong> and <strong>Casandra Shaffer.<\/strong> Para-swimmer <strong>Anna Johannes<\/strong> is on the institutional awareness and cultural change steering committee along with water polo coach <strong>John Abdou.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sarah Bofinger<\/strong> (para-swimming), <strong>Kelly Fox<\/strong> (diving), <strong>Mariejo Truex<\/strong> (swimming) and <strong>Nancy Atufunwa<\/strong> (water polo) are the aquatic community ambassadors.<\/p>\n<p>The full list of Team USA Council on Racial and Social Justice members:<\/p>\n<h4>Leadership Team<\/h4>\n<p>Greta Neimanas, athlete, Para-cycling<br \/>\nJason Pryor, athlete, fencing<br \/>\nMoushaumi Robinson, athlete, track and field<br \/>\nIris Zimmermann, USOPA, fencing<br \/>\nMax Siegel, NGB\/HPMO, track and field<br \/>\nJudith B.
