{"id":445081,"date":"2020-08-28T08:29:37","date_gmt":"2020-08-28T15:29:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=445081"},"modified":"2020-09-01T20:28:44","modified_gmt":"2020-09-02T03:28:44","slug":"usc-water-polo-pauses-workouts-after-spate-of-positive-covid-19-tests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/usc-water-polo-pauses-workouts-after-spate-of-positive-covid-19-tests\/","title":{"rendered":"Updated: USC Water Polo Paused Until Sept. 8 after Positive COVID-19 Tests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>USC <a href=\"https:\/\/usctrojans.com\/news\/2020\/8\/26\/usc-trojans-football-mens-water-polo-pause-workouts-positive-covid-19-coronavirus-tests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">has paused workouts<\/a> for men&#8217;s water polo and football until at least Sept. 8 after a spate of athletes in those sports tested positive for COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>Eight positive tests were reported Aug. 26 when the sports were originally paused. An <a href=\"https:\/\/usctrojans.com\/news\/2020\/8\/31\/usc-trojans-football-mens-water-polo-workouts-remain-paused-covid-19-coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">additional positive test was found<\/a> on Aug. 28. Rounds of testing are scheduled for Aug. 31 and Sept. 4 before the sports can be cleared to return.<\/p>\n<p>The university did not specify how many positives occurred from each team. All eight student-athletes have been isolated and undergone contract tracing. From that latter process, the school determined that, \u201cthe virus was contracted off campus as a result of increased community spread and not via any on-campus or training activities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The athletes will undergo another round of testing this week. The school deemed, \u201cthe risk of exposure by any coaches, staff, and other student-athletes\u201d as \u201cvery low.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have effective mitigation strategies in place,&#8221; USC athletic director <strong>Mike Bohn<\/strong> said in an Aug. 26 university statement, &#8220;but out of an abundance of caution we are pausing athletics activities in football and men&#8217;s water polo while we await additional test results and USC completes the contact tracing process.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>USC on Aug. 24 <a href=\"https:\/\/we-are.usc.edu\/2020\/08\/24\/8-24-community-health-advisory-covid-19-cases-in-off-campus-residences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">issued a community health advisory<\/a> warning of \u201can alarming increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in students in the University Park Campus community\u201d since the fall semester began. More than 100 students, as of Monday, were in 14-day self-isolation due to exposure. All of the cases were related to students living off campus.<\/p>\n<p>The positive tests are in stark contrast to USC\u2019s previous testing record, which since July 18 had revealed one positive for a student-athlete among 654 tests, including none in August. As of Aug. 28, the quantity of positives had risen to 16 confirmed cases in 1,127 tests.<\/p>\n<p>USC and the Pac-12 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/pac-12-conference-to-postpone-sports-including-swimming-through-jan-1-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">have postponed all sporting competitions through the end of 2020<\/a>. Among the teams on campus for workouts are football, men\u2019s water polo, women\u2019s soccer and women\u2019s volleyball, and men\u2019s and women\u2019s basketball.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>USC has paused workouts for men&#8217;s water polo and football until at least Sept. 8 after a spate of athletes in those sports tested positive for COVID-19.
