{"id":444731,"date":"2020-08-23T14:20:10","date_gmt":"2020-08-23T21:20:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=444731"},"modified":"2020-08-28T17:58:29","modified_gmt":"2020-08-29T00:58:29","slug":"new-facebook-group-started-for-iowa-swimming-diving-alumni-to-save-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/new-facebook-group-started-for-iowa-swimming-diving-alumni-to-save-program\/","title":{"rendered":"New Facebook Group Started For Iowa Swimming &#038; Diving Alumni to Save Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new Facebook group calling all alumni for the University of Iowa swimming and diving program has been created to unite over 100 years of swimmers to try and band together to help reverse the decision to save the program after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/university-of-iowa-to-cut-swimming-diving-after-2020-21-season-updated\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">university announced<\/a> it would cut four sports after the 2021 season.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/iowaswimminganddivingalumniunite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>The Facebook page can be found here<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/the-university-of-iowa-save-uiowa-swim-dive?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>A petition can be signed to save the program here.<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Iowa swimming and diving finished sixth at the 2020 Big Ten Men&#8217;s Swimming &amp; Diving Championships out of ten teams as the Hawkeyes become the first men\u2019s swim team cut in the Big Ten since Illinois finished competing after the 1993 season.<\/p>\n<p>Iowa\u2019s women\u2019s team was ninth at Big Ten\u2019s this year out of 13 teams as no women\u2019s team in the Big Ten, besides the University of Maryland, has cut women\u2019s swimming, making this decision a truly historical one.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Iowa is also scheduled to host the upcoming men\u2019s\u00a0NCAA Division I swimming and diving championships in 2021\u00a0as their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hawkeyesports.com\/campus-recreation-and-wellness-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">world class facility<\/a> first opened its doors in the summer of 2010 and has hosted the 2015 NCAAs as well as five Big Ten championships \u2013 three men and two women.\u00a0<em>Swimming World\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/stripping-ncaa-mens-champs-from-iowa-is-only-answer-to-schools-disrespect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">has called on a relocation of the 2021 men&#8217;s NCAAs<\/a> to a campus that would adequately support swimming and diving.<\/p>\n<p>Iowa swimming and diving qualified four swimmers to the 2020 NCAA championships before the meet was cancelled to slow down COVID-19 \u2013 two from each team. Senior <strong>Hannah Burvill\u00a0<\/strong>qualified in the 200 free along with junior\u00a0<strong>Kelsey Drake\u00a0<\/strong>(200 butterfly), sophomore\u00a0<strong>Anze Fers Erzen\u00a0<\/strong>(200 back) and junior\u00a0<strong>Daniel Swanepoel\u00a0<\/strong>(200 breaststroke).
