{"id":444505,"date":"2020-08-21T07:06:58","date_gmt":"2020-08-21T14:06:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=444505"},"modified":"2020-08-21T07:06:58","modified_gmt":"2020-08-21T14:06:58","slug":"reece-whitley-this-generation-was-part-of-something-that-made-great-change-for-our-country","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/reece-whitley-this-generation-was-part-of-something-that-made-great-change-for-our-country\/","title":{"rendered":"Reece Whitley: &#8216;This Generation Was Part of Something That Made Great Change for Our Country&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When racial tension in the United States was at a fever pitch and the Black Lives Matter movement gained momentum, <strong>Reece Whitley<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/reece-whitley-silence-in-the-face-of-injustice-is-complicity-urges-action-rather-than-just-words\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> urged people to get involved<\/a> in the fight against racial injustice and inequality.<\/p>\n<p>Months later, Whitley is doing all that he can to make sure the momentum is still moving forward in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>It has given him a clearer picture of what the country needs, and a clearer picture of what his future will entail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am finding a bit more of my purpose, not only within the sport but in life,\u201d Reece Whitley told <em>Swimming World<\/em>. \u201cIt is still evolving. But after this movement I am having more of a clear picture of what that will look like down the road.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whitley, a junior at <a href=\"https:\/\/calbears.com\/sports\/mens-swimming-and-diving\/roster\/reece-whitley\/16284\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cal<\/a>, has been involved with several organizations, including Black Leadership and Aquatics Coalition, working with USA Swimming. We are extremely determined to promote long lasting change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Black Lives Matter movement has been around for years. So why is it finally gaining momentum?<\/p>\n<p>The video of <strong>George Floyd<\/strong> with a Minneapolis police officer\u2019s knee on his neck, which proved to be fatal, was something that jolted the nation, but it also wasn\u2019t the first video like that to surface.<\/p>\n<p>Whitley said there are several factors that have given the movement more momentum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe videos have always been there,\u201d he said. \u201cBut the age that we are in as far as social media, and with quarantine, people were taking things more seriously. A lot more people had the time to read more things than they would have and had the time to talk about it with their families. I think people learned about themselves and who they surround themselves with. That experience is what really drove that initial power on making this movement what it is now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That supports what Whitley said all along was the most important step toward achieving the goal of racial equality \u2014\u00a0having conversations.<\/p>\n<p>The conversations have been going on long enough and have been heard. The work is not done, but Whitley said it finally reached the point where nothing is going to take that conversation away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe conversation is at a point where it is not going to stop,\u201d Reece Whitley said. \u201cA lot of people are very, very committed in seeing things through. Hopefully in my lifetime, I can sit back and say I was part of something \u2014 this generation was a part of something \u2014 that made great change for our country.\u201d<\/p>\n<div
