The native of Victoria, British Columbia, had trained at the High Performance Center there. He\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimming.ca\/en\/swimmer\/jeremy-bagshaw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">competed in the last three<\/a> World Championships, as part of the Canadian 800 freestyle relay at the 2019 edition in Gwangju, South Korea. He won relay bronze and finaled in two events at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto.<\/p>\n<p>Bagshaw finished second in the 200 free at the Canadian Olympic Trials in 2016, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2016-canadian-trials-day-1-finals-live-recap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">finishing 0.03 seconds behind<\/a> <strong>Markus Thormeyer<\/strong> to miss a chance to go to Rio. The Canadian 800 free relay did not qualify for Rio.<\/p>\n<p>An integrative biology major at Cal, Bagshaw obtained his master\u2019s degree in exercise physiology at the University of Victoria. Medical school wasn\u2019t always in his sights, but a career in the sciences was. His hands-on experience includes serving as an athlete representative for Swimming Canada\u2019s Swimming Working Group that crafted the nation\u2019s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/swimming-canada-releases-return-to-swimming-resource-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Return to Swimming<\/a>&#8221; plan during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first two years of my undergrad I kind of wasn\u2019t sure and then through taking a bunch of bio classes and science classes I figured it was something I was leaning towards,\u201d Bagshaw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimming.ca\/en\/news\/2020\/08\/18\/bagshaw-ready-to-pursue-medical-school-while-still-chasing-the-olympic-dream\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told Swimming Canada<\/a>. \u201cThen I had the chance to shadow a doctor in Victoria for a little while and that kind of just built up my interest in doing it and following that career.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Swimming Canada coach <strong>Martyn Wilby<\/strong> connected Bagshaw with the University of Limerick, whose men\u2019s team Bagshaw will train with. The facility includes a 50-meter pool.<\/p>\n<p>It gives Bagshaw something else to focus on as he aims for Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just exciting, I think it adds another piece of what athletes are,\u201d Bagshaw said. \u201cUp until this I did my undergrad and stuff like that but it wasn\u2019t anything definitive like setting myself up for a career after swimming.
