Mike DeWine Tuesday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/highschoolsports\/2020\/08\/ohio-high-school-football-cleared-to-begin-by-gov-mike-dewine.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to sanction contact sports in the fall<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The green light includes football, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohsaa.org\/news-media\/articles\/governor-gives-green-light-for-contact-sports-urges-caution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">other contact sports<\/a> like soccer and field hockey are also covered. The sports had been in a holding pattern with August practices suspended. The order goes into effect Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The ruling doesn\u2019t directly apply to swimming and diving, <a href=\"https:\/\/ohsaa.org\/sports\/swimming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">which is a winter sport for the OHSAA<\/a>. Practices for swimming begin in late October with competition beginning in late November; some states have issued delays lasting at least that long into the fall.<\/p>\n<p>DeWine, who had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/coronavirus-live-updates\/2020\/08\/06\/899798411\/ohio-gov-mike-dewine-tests-positive-for-the-coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an apparent false positive test for COVID-19<\/a> earlier this month, met with administrators and sports officials to produce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.journal-news.com\/news\/ohsaa-releases-sport-specific-coronavirus-safety-guidelines-following-governor-announcement\/XHLL5P2VXBFG3CBDREK4W5P7KQ\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sport-specific guidelines<\/a> for competition in seven sports (cross country, field hockey, football, golf, soccer, girls tennis, volleyball). <a href=\"https:\/\/ohsaaweb.blob.core.windows.net\/files\/BulletinBoard\/20200818AdministratorUpdate.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">They include squad limitations<\/a> for contact sports, schedule alterations and spectator capacities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope that the desire to have a season will inspire our young people, our athletes, our student-athletes, 24\/7 to be as careful as they can,\u201d DeWine said during a press conference. \u201cI hope also that our coaches will use this an opportunity to focus on helping these young people understand what really is at stake. If they are going to be able to play, that they are going to have to do everything they can to keep COVID out of their team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The announcement was accompanied by the OHSAA lifting a prohibition on playing fall sports in the spring, which offers an alternative if competition can\u2019t proceed this fall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe OHSAA is moving forward because we want kids to have an opportunity to participate, and the Governor\u2019s Office is providing that opportunity and a chance,\u201d OHSAA interim executive director <strong>Bob Goldring<\/strong> said in a press statement. \u201cSo for that we are most appreciative. It\u2019s important to remember that our student-athletes have been practicing and training with others for weeks and even months, and it has gone well.
