{"id":444097,"date":"2020-08-16T03:00:55","date_gmt":"2020-08-16T10:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=444097"},"modified":"2020-08-17T03:11:37","modified_gmt":"2020-08-17T10:11:37","slug":"chloe-mccardel-reaches-france-to-break-channel-crossing-record","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/chloe-mccardel-reaches-france-to-break-channel-crossing-record\/","title":{"rendered":"Chloe McCardel Reaches France To Break Channel Crossing Record"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Chloe McCardel Reaches France To Break <a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelswimmingassociation.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Channel Crossing<\/a> Record<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Chloe McCardel<\/strong> has broken the men&#8217;s world record for the number of English Channel crossings after the Australian negotiated the stretch of water for the 35th time.<\/p>\n<p>McCardel, a Melbourne-raised Sydneysider, took 10 hours and 40 minutes to complete the crossing &#8211; her fourth in a fortnight.<\/p>\n<p>She left Abbot&#8217;s Cliff beach near Folkestone at 20:00 BST on Saturday, and arrived in France just before 07:00 on Sunday having successfully negotiated the 34km stretch of treacherous water in the world&#8217;s busiest shipping lane.<\/p>\n<p>She intended to spend a few moments on the French shore before swimming back out to her support boat for the return journey.<\/p>\n<p>She told the BBC:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m in great spirits.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I would like to have a little celebration this evening in England. I&#8217;m extremely lucky to be surrounded by so much love and support, from my English host to my support boat captains and crew, and I&#8217;m excited to celebrate this achievement together with them.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There was relief too at having learned she had not fallen foul of the UK-France quarantine rules.<\/p>\n<p>She was worried arriving in Calais would require her to self-isolate but she said coastguards have given her the all-clear.<\/p>\n<p>The 35-year-old started her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/chloe-mccardel-set-to-break-english-channel-crossing-record\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">21-mile swim<\/a> from Abbot&#8217;s Cliff beach near Folkestone at 20:00 BST on Saturday, and arrived in France just before 07:00.<\/p>\n<p>She intended to spend only a few moments on the French shore before swimming back out to her support boat for the return journey.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Department of Transport<\/strong> had advised Ms McCardel to seek legal advice ahead of the swim with the Channel Swimming Association telling her it could go ahead.<\/p>\n<p>McCardel said shortly before starting the attempt:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;They said Channel swims are allowed as long as you observe social distancing when you land and don&#8217;t stay on the shore for more than 10 minutes, which is standard practice for us.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ms McCardel is now second on the list of the most Channel swims, passing the men&#8217;s record of 34 held by Briton <strong>Kevin Murphy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Equalling the women&#8217;s record will be a greater task, however &#8211; <strong>Alison Streeter<\/strong>, the &#8220;Queen of the English Channel&#8221;, has swum the distance 43 times.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-portrait has-caption full-width\"><\/figure>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Advertising: Shop At Swim360<br \/>\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/ads.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/absolutebm.aspx?b=1546\"><\/script><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chloe McCardel Reaches France To Break Channel Crossing Record Chloe McCardel has broken the men&#8217;s world record for the number of English Channel crossings after the Australian negotiated the stretch<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":7575,"featured_media":443886,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":false,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"dois","enabled":false},"version":2}},"categories":[3,10],"tags":[124955,58128,44487,1941,124954],"class_list":["post-444097","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-featured","category-world","tag-alison-streeter","tag-channel-crossing","tag-chloe-mccardel","tag-kent","tag-kevin-murphy"],"jetpack_publicize_connections":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v24.3 (Yoast SEO v24.3) -
