﻿{"id":444053,"date":"2020-08-15T13:34:11","date_gmt":"2020-08-15T20:34:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=444053"},"modified":"2020-08-15T13:34:11","modified_gmt":"2020-08-15T20:34:11","slug":"wisconsin-high-schools-have-alternative-fall-season-option-in-spring-decision-up-to-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/wisconsin-high-schools-have-alternative-fall-season-option-in-spring-decision-up-to-schools\/","title":{"rendered":"Wisconsin High Schools Have Alternative Fall Season Option in Spring, Decision Up to Schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wisconsin high schools will have an option of pushing fall sports to spring in an alternative season format that was passed.<\/p>\n<p>The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) approved several details of a high school one-year alternative season in the spring for fall sports and reduced the number of weeks for sports during the 2020-21 winter and spring seasons at its August meeting, which includes swimming and football.<\/p>\n<p>For planning and scheduling purposes, schools will be required to initially declare if they plan to participate in the traditional fall season or the alternate fall season in the spring by Sept. 1.<\/p>\n<p>The Board established the parameters and context of the alternate fall season with seven weeks of competition in the spring. Football programs unable to start or complete 50 percent of the fall season, including games and practices, are eligible for a prorated alternate season. Other fall sports unable to start or complete 50 percent of the fall season, including games and practices, are eligible for a complete alternate season. However, during the closed-session meeting, the Board directed staff to have discussions on coaching contact during 2020-21 placed on the agenda of the September meeting.<\/p>\n<p>* Licensed officials will not drop in classification in 2021-22 if they choose not to renew licensure or are unable to fill a varsity schedule. in 2020-21.<\/p>\n<p>The Board also determined student-athletes may compete in no more than two nonschool events with school approval during each regular sports season in 2020-21 only, which adopts the middle-level regulation. An \u201cevent\u201d will be defined as a game or tournament.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201c<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiaawi.org\/Portals\/0\/PDF\/Health\/Covid\/WIAA-Return-to-Fall-Sports.pdf\">Return to Fall Sports Considerations<\/a><\/strong>\u201d was approved for distribution to the membership and for placement on the COVID-19 page of the WIAA website for Wisconsin high school sports.
