NEW COMMIT:\u00a0<\/strong>Junior National qualifier\u00a0Summer West\u00a0<\/strong>of Huntington Beach, Calif. has announced her verbal commitment to the University of Minnesota<\/a> beginning in the fall of 2021.<\/p>\n

She will suit up for the Golden Gophers as a member of the class of 2025 along with Lyndsey Wehr<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0Hannah Cornish<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0Oksana Chaput<\/strong><\/a>, and\u00a0Eliot Kennedy<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

She told\u00a0Swimming World:<\/em><\/p>\n

“I\u2019m so stoked to announce my commitment to swim and study at the University of Minnesota! I chose Minnesota because of the incredible coaching staff, the close knit team culture, and all of the amazing resources available to the athletes. I\u2019m beyond thankful for my coaches, teammates, family, and friends who helped me along the way to make this decision. I can\u2019t wait to be a Golden Gopher! #SkiUMah”\ufe0f\ufe0f\ufe0f<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

A talented distance freestyler, West does her club swimming with Irvine Novaquatics and has achieved the Junior National cut in the 1000 free. She most recently finished fourth in the 1000 free, seventh in the 500 free, and eighth in the mile at Carlsbad Sectionals after finishing 16th in the latter event at Juniors West in December.<\/p>\n

Last summer, West competed at the Fran Crippen Memorial Swim Meet of Champions and the Los Angeles Invitational. At Mount Hood Futures, she raced to sixth in the 1500m free and ninth in the 800m free en route to achieving best times in both events.<\/p>\n
