The decision would sideline many of the nation\u2019s top NCAA swimming programs and hamper the Olympic training efforts of numerous hopefuls from a variety of countries. The conference is hoping to play the fall sports again in the spring.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">SAN FRANCISCO (AP) \u2014 AP Source: Pac-12 Conference cancels fall football season, postpones all sports until Jan. 1 because of COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Zeke Miller (@ZekeJMiller) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ZekeJMiller\/status\/1293276875847086088?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 11, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The Associated Press and ESPN first reported the shutdown Tuesday afternoon. An official announcement came soon after. Athletes will continue to have their scholarships honored and get university support during the shutdown.<\/p>\n<p>The decision follows a similar decision made by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/big-ten-conference-officially-postpones-fall-sports-spring-a-possibility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Big Ten Conference<\/a> earlier today, which cancelled its football season with the potential of playing in the spring. The SEC, ACC and Big XII have not postponed fall sports as of yet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe health, safety and well-being of our student-athletes and all those connected to Pac-12 sports has been our number one priority since the start of this current crisis,\u201d Pac-12 Commissioner <strong>Larry Scott<\/strong> said <a href=\"https:\/\/pac-12.com\/article\/2020\/08\/11\/pac-12-conference-postpones-all-sport-competitions-through-end-calendar-year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in a conference statement<\/a>. \u201cOur student-athletes, fans, staff and all those who love college sports would like to have seen the season played this calendar year as originally planned, and we know how disappointing this is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of the Pac-12 presidents and chancellors understand the importance of this decision, and the disappointment it will create for our student-athletes, the coaches, support staff and all of our fans,\u201d said <strong>Michael H. Schill,<\/strong> president of the University of Oregon. \u201cUltimately, our decision was guided by science and a deep commitment to the health and welfare of student-athletes. We certainly hope that the Pac-12 will be able to return to competition in the New Year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The news comes on the heels of the Big Ten <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/big-ten-conference-officially-postpones-fall-sports-spring-a-possibility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">postponing its football season due to COVID-19 earlier Tuesday<\/a>. The swim season, which begins in late September and early October, is directly affected by the Pac-12\u2019s announcement, something that\u2019s wasn\u2019t the case in the Big Ten announcement.<\/p>\n<p>Concerns over training continuity have driven international students to defer enrollment in colleges and remain at home. One of the highest-profile recruits to the Pac-12, Stanford-bound world-record holder <strong>Regan Smith,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/regan-smith-will-defer-enrollment-to-stanford-for-olympic-redshirt-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">deferred her enrollment for just that reason<\/a>, as did fellow incoming Stanford freshman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/team-usas-lillie-nordmann-to-defer-enrollment-to-stanford-until-2021-22\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Lillie Nordmann<\/strong><\/a>. Arizona State had preemptively <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/will-arizona-state-regan-smith-decisions-cause-ripple-effect-in-ncaa-waters\/\">red-shirted its swimmers for the season<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Pac-12 Conference will cancel sports for the fall semester, through Jan. 1, 2021, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
