Jean Hurring<\/strong> (nee Stewart), who won bronze in the women\u2019s 100 backstroke at the 1952 Olympics and competed at the 1956 Games, died Sunday in her native New Zealand<\/a>. She was 89 years old.<\/p>\n

Hurring, competed then under her maiden name Jean Stewart, won bronze in the 100 back in Helsinki, finishing behind South Africa\u2019s Joan Harrison<\/strong> and Geertje Wielema<\/strong> of the Netherlands. In the final, Hurring was given the same time, 1:15.8, as Joke de Korte<\/strong> of Holland, but the finish judges gave Hurring the nod to win bronze, part of a furious comeback in which she was seventh after 50 meters.<\/p>\n
