People seem to believe that being an \u201cA\u201d student, a \u201cB\u201d student or a \u201cC\u201d student is dependent upon some innate, natural ability: a special academic talent that you either have or you don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the same in swimming.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a commonly held view that gold medals are won by naturally gifted and talented swimmers\u2014that it\u2019s their natural \u201ctalent\u201d that determines how fast they swim.<\/p>\n<p>Yet in education\u2014and in sport\u2014success is a choice. It\u2019s a conscious decision to be remarkable, to be better, to become the best.<\/p>\n<p>The door to swimming success is opened when you decide\u2014when you deliberately choose\u2014that you\u2019d like to be an \u201cA\u201d swimmer.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s look at how you can make that choice and what you can do every day\u2014in and out of the pool\u2014to become the swimmer you want to be.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #666699;\">STEP 1. CHOOSE TO CHOOSE<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nThe first step in becoming an \u201cA\u201d swimmer is accepting that your success is YOUR choice. There\u2019s a lot of things in life you can\u2019t control. But there\u2019s one thing you can: you can choose to choose.<br \/>\nThink of it this way: if it\u2019s not your choice to become an \u201cA\u201d swimmer, whose is it?<\/p>\n<p>Your coach is there to inspire you, to guide you, to help you improve physically, mentally, technically and strategically&#8230;but it\u2019s YOUR CHOICE whether or not you\u2019ll listen to your coach, take their advice and train to the best of your ability every day.<\/p>\n<p>Your parents might pay your swim fees, drive you to and from workouts and support you at meets, but it\u2019s YOUR CHOICE to be committed to training, dryland workouts, practice sessions and competition.<\/p>\n<p>Choosing to choose means making a simple statement: \u201cIf it is to be, it is up to me!\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/issues\/2020\/swimming-world-magazine-august-2020-issue-pdf-only\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>To access GoldMinds&#8217;
