Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/reports-indianapolis-bidding-to-host-2024-olympic-swim-trials-inside-football-stadium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>By Andy Ross<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The city of Indianapolis will be bidding to host the 2024 Olympic Swim Trials inside Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the Indianapolis Colts football team, according to a report from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.indystar.com\/story\/sports\/college\/indiana\/2020\/08\/05\/indianapolis-trying-2024-olympic-usa-swim-trials-lucas-oil-stadium\/3302827001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Indy Star<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and confirmed by the Indiana Sports Corp. The stadium hosts 70,000 people and would be a huge upgrade from the CHI Health Center in Omaha which seats 17,560 and has hosted the Olympic Trials in 2008, 2012 and 2016, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2020-olympic-trials-dates-officially-set\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">will again host next year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Indianapolis lasted hosted the Olympic Trials in 2000 at the legendary IU Natatorium, one of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/favorite-pools-john-lohn-on-the-history-and-aura-of-the-indiana-university-natatorium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">swimming landmarks<\/a>\u00a0in the United States. Photo Courtesy: Kyodo News\/Rikako Ikee<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/rikako-ikee-rethinks-race-return-plans-after-japan-fed-restricts-event-entries-to-32-40-swimmers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>By Craig Lord, Swimming World Editor-in-Chief<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A decision by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swim.or.jp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Japanese Swimming Federation<\/a>\u00a0to restrict the number of swimmers allowed at any meet to between 32 and 40 competitors may hasten the race-comeback plans of sprint ace\u00a0<strong>Rikako Ikee<\/strong>, who returned to the pool in March for the first time since she was diagnosed with leukemia last year.<\/p>\n<p>A month ago,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/rikako-ikee-eyes-october-return-to-racing-covid-19-allowing-as-tokyo-sees-surge-in-infections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0Ikee told the Japanese media<\/a>\u00a0invited to watch her train that she had pencilled in\u00a0the Japan intercollegiate championships in October for a possible first test of race skills.<\/p>\n<p>Now, however, a decision of the federation\u2019s board on Tuesday this week to respond to the continuing challenges of the coronavirus pandemic by restricting numbers at competitions may bring forward Ikee\u2019s competitive comeback to August 27 at a university duel in Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p>Eligibility for a place among the 32-40 swimmers will be determined by comparing times recorded since April 2019, ruling Ikee out.\u00a0The duel between Nihon University, where Rikako Ikee is a second-year student, and Chuo University at the\u00a0<strong>Tokyo Tatsumi International Swimming Center<\/strong>\u00a0on August 27 involves fewer swimmers\u00a0and would allow her to register a time before the September 11 deadline for applications to enter the more competitive intercollegiate championships the following month.<\/p>\n<h3>The Week That Was #3: Sharon Van Rouwendaal to Move to Magdeburg &amp; Curzan became the youngest swimmer to ever break 50 seconds in the event as she moved to fifth all-time with her swim, just off the fastest time in history at 49.26 by\u00a0<strong>Louise Hansson\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Maggie MacNeil<\/strong>. Touretski was 71 and suffered a fatal stroke.<\/p>\n<p>He started coaching in 1973 and began work with the Soviet national team in 1979. From there, Touretski built a sterling career, as he coached legendary sprint star\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ishof.org\/aleksandr-popov-(rus).html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Alexander Popov<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0to double Olympic gold in 1992 and 1996. Popov long revered Touretski and gave the coach his 1996 Olympic gold medal from the 100 freestyle. Touretski was also the mentor to sprint standouts\u00a0<strong>Gennadi Prigoda<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Vladimir Pyshnenko*\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Andrey Grechin<\/strong>\u00a0during his days in Russia.<\/p>\n<p>After the fall of the Soviet Union, Touretski worked as a chief specialist at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra where he was based from 1992 until\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/touretski-fired-by-australian-institute-of-sport\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">he was dismissed in 2002<\/a>. While in Australia, Touretski coached Olympic medalist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/aussie-swimmer-michael-klim-to-be-inducted-into-the-international-swimming-hall-of-fame-as-part-of-class-of-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Michael Klim<\/strong><\/a>, who has been selected for induction into the International Swimming Hall of Fame. Popov followed Touretski to Australia, a nod to the tight relationship between the men.<\/p>\n<p>Touretski\u2019s dismissal from the Australian Institute of Sport was related to anabolic steroids being found by police during an investigation into a robbery at Touretski\u2019s home in 2001. Touretski denied they were used to aid his athletes.
