Then, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/issues\/2018\/swimming-world-magazine-december-2018-issue-pdf-only\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">December 2018<\/a>, we explained the concept of \u201cbase of support\u201d (BOS) to maximize propulsion with specific information for butterfly (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/issues\/2019\/swimming-world-magazine-january-2019-issue-pdf-only\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">January<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/issues\/2019\/swimming-world-magazine-february-2019-issue-pdf-only\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">February 2019<\/a>) and freestyle (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/issues\/2019\/swimming-world-magazine-june-2019-issue-pdf-only\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">June 2019<\/a>). This month\u2019s focus is the base of support for breaststroke.<\/p>\n<p>The torso is the swimmer\u2019s BOS. During a stroke cycle of a typical breaststroker, excess vertical motion of the shoulder distorts the BOS, which compromises the ability to maximize propulsion and, as a result, limits swimming velocity. The level torso provides an optimal position for beginning an effective arm motion.<\/p>\n<p>There is, however, a considerable difference in the head and arm positions of the swimmer and model. The model\u2019s head and arms are level with the BOS. The swimmer\u2019s head and arms are above the BOS.
