THE number 11-ranked Georgia men's and the No. 2 women's swimming and diving teams claimed a pair of victories by sweeping
Clemson Friday evening at Gabrielsen Natatorium. The Lady Bulldogs won by the score of 131-107, while the men were victorious 137-101.

"We are proud of how hard the kids raced," said assistant coach Harvey Humphries. "A lot of kids took advantage of the opportunities they had to win by swimming well even though they were tired from training this week."

Sophomore Todd Avery tallied a personal-best score of 332.02 in the 1-meter diving event, which bettered his previous personal best of 307.42 that he posted earlier this season on Nov. 7 against Georgia Tech. Sophomore Kris Daugherty hit a personal best as well with a mark of 320.40 on the 1- meter. Avery and Daugherty snatched first and second-place finishes, respectively, in the event. Daugherty went on to
win the 3-meter event, while Avery finished third.

Bulldogs Matt Owen, Scot Davis, and Randy Lam placed first, second and third, respectively, in the 1000-yard freestyle. Owen scored first place points with a season best of 9:18.69 in the race. Davis finished with a time of 9:33.66, while Lam placed third in a time of 9:41.42.

Junior Andrew Mahaney was a double winner on the night by taking first place in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle, and Peter Osborn, who was a part of the winning 400-yard medley relay, placed fourth in the
200-yard freestyle. The rest of the 400-yard medley relay team was comprised of Scott Gardner, Peter Verhoef, and Damian Alleyne. The team finished in a time of 3:23.10.

Winning the meet in style, the Bulldogs racked in a number of season best times. Brent McAuliffe, a junior, scored a season-best time and a first-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of
1:51.8, while sophomore Robert Margalis finished first in the 200-yard back with a season best of 1:49.51.

But the victories did not stop there, as newcomer Jonathan Schmidt had a season-best time of 1:53.55 in
the 200-yard butterfly, and sophomore Scott Gardner placed third in the 100-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 46.73. Sophomore Josh Laban posted a first-place finish in the 50-yard free with a time of
21.38.

"Cole Taylor did a great job in the 200-yard backstroke," offered Humphries. "Andrew Mahaney did a good job finishing his races; he was very strong on his finishes in both the 200 and 500 (yard) freestyle.
Todd Avery was again his best on the 1-meter."

The women got great swims from a variety of athletes, as seven different Lady Bulldogs post first-place finishes. Brooke Bassham was a double winner by claiming top honors on both the 1- and 3-meter
springboard.

The foursome of Lauren Gettel, Virginia Pate, Ali Williams and Paige Kearns got the Lady Bulldogs on the right track by winning the meet's opening event with a time of 3:49.03 in the 400-yard medley relay.

Rebecca Rose stopped the clock in 10:08.12 to win the 1000-yard freestyle, while Kearns won the 200-yard freestyle. Freshman Jordan Wallace looked impressive by winning the 50-yard free in 23.77, leading a 1-2 Georgia finish in the event.

Tricia Harm's time of 2:05.08 was good for first place in the 200-yard individual medley, followed by Maritza Correia's victory in the 200-yard butterfly (2:03.86). Gettel won the 100-yard freestyle in 51.82.

"It was good to see Jordan Wallace back and swimming well after an illness," said Humphries. "On the women's side, it was a total team performance. It just shows our depth, and we are real pleased to have that many different kids to come in and win an event."

The Clemson women claimed victories in the final four swimming events of the night.

"Chris Ip is one of the great coaches in our profession, and we can already see that he is going to do a great job at Clemson by the direction that his program is going. It was a pleasure to have him and
his squad here," added Humphries. "His team raced tough with a lot of class, and our kids were able to meet the challenge."

Georgia will be back in action Saturday, Nov. 16, as the men and women will take on instate foe Emory University at Gabrielsen Natatorium beginning at 11 a.m.

Final Score:
Men:
Georgia 137
Clemson 101

Women:
Georgia 131
Clemson 107

ATHENS, Georgia, November 15.
