As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is likely to be the last goal scored in men&#8217;s college water polo for a long time\u2014including what would have been the men&#8217;s 2020 season.<\/p>\r\n<p>With COVID-19 cases spiking throughout the country, college conferences have responded by suspending fall sports until 2021. These postponements make it extremely unlikely that there will men&#8217;s water polo competition the fall.\u00a0 In a striking contrast to safe practices, Power Five universities are planning virtual learning for the fall semester while their athletic directors are scrambling to launch a 2020 football season to preserve precious television revenue.\u00a0 But, a trend towards safety in sports does exist: nationwide, non-revenue sports are being postponed this fall, including men&#8217;s water polo.<\/p>\r\n<p>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/commentary-2020-spring-season-cancelled-by-ncaa-is-not-the-new-normal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Commentary: 2020 Spring Season Cancelled by NCAA is NOT the New Normal<\/em><\/a>]<\/p>\r\n<p>Last month saw a flurry of announcements concerning the sport, with more to come. Photo Courtesy: Shumesa Mohsin<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p><strong>Dan Sharadin<\/strong>, the CWPA commissioner, has proposed a January to March men&#8217;s season in the event the NCAA eliminates or reschedules fall championship play. He also suggested resetting the women&#8217;s season from March to May in order to accommodate his conference&#8217;s 17 head coaches who coach both genders.<\/p>\r\n<p>The next day, Texas-based Austin College announced that it would suspend competition in men&#8217;s water polo for the fall of 2020.\u00a0 The &#8216;Roo team is in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), which includes USC, UCLA, Cal-Berkeley and Stanford\u2014historically the top teams in NCAA polo\u2014as well as Penn State Behrend, like Austin a Division III program .<\/p>\r\n<p>On July 24, NCAA President <strong>Mark Emmert<\/strong> spoke about his association&#8217;s approach to sports in the age of the coronavirus.<\/p>\r\n<div class=\"article__content\">\r\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden component__content--wysiwyg\">\r\n<div class=\"field-items\">\r\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\r\n<p>\u201cToday the Board of Governors and I agreed that we must continue to thoughtfully and aggressively monitor health conditions around the country and the implementation of the COVID-19 guidelines we issued last week,&#8221; his statement read. &#8220;The health and well-being of college athletes is the highest priority in deciding whether to proceed with our 22 NCAA championships beginning in late November.<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;We all remain deeply concerned about the infection trend lines we see. It is clear that the format of our championships will have to change if they are to be conducted in a safe and fair manner. \u00a0We discussed other complexities in addition to the health and safety impacts, to include team availability, travel limitations and various local and state restrictions. Courtesy: Tony Leon<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p>And on July 29, the Big West Conference suspended its fall sports until 2021. Five of it&#8217;s members sponsor men&#8217;s water polo. Three are members of the Golden Coast Conference (GCC)\u2014UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara and Long Beach State. Two are from the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA)\u2014UC Davis, and UC San Diego. That&#8217;s why I just don&#8217;t see play happening for the fall.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n<p>July 31 brought more news.\u00a0 The GCC announced that it would not play in the fall and left open the possibility that they would begin play in January pending NCAA announcements concerning fall sports and championships.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;The pandemic has had a major impact in the state of California over the last few weeks which has forced us to make some tough decisions in collegiate athletics,&#8221;\u00a0 said GCC Commissioner <strong>Mike Daniels<\/strong>. &#8220;We are hopeful this will enable us to have a full season come January.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n<p>The MPSF has yet to announce its intentions for the upcoming fall season.\u00a0 It would seem to be the last piece of a puzzle that has increasingly is coming into clear focus: There will not be NCAA men&#8217;s water polo in 2020.<\/p>\r\n<p>At press time, 32 of the 49 teams have postponed their seasons. The NCAA will likely make a decision concerning the fall championships in the coming days.\u00a0 The 2020 championship tournament is scheduled to be held at Stanford&#8217;s Avery Aquatic Center. Cohn gained international experience as a player-coach in Australia and represented the USA in the 1985 Maccabiah Games where his team won a silver medal. He was an Assistant Men's Water Polo Coach at Palomar College in San Diego. Additionally, Cohn was a college-rated water polo official from 1986 to 1992. Most recently, Bill served 5 seasons as the Assistant Coach for the San Diego State University Women's Water Polo team from 2014 through 2019. Cohn has announced College Water Polo and Swimming since 1990. He currently serves as the voice of the UC San Diego Tritons in Water Polo, Swimming, Basketball and Volleyball. He has also worked in play-by-play and analyst roles for men's and women's NCAA Water polo championship webcasts since 2010.
