The native of Longueuil, Quebec, started swimming internationally in 1998 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/multiple-paralympic-medallist-benoit-huot-announces-retirement-from-competitive-swimming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced his retirement last year<\/a>. He\u2019s set <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/benoit-huot-breaks-mens-400-im-disability-world-record\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">numerous world records<\/a> and was named the 2005 Men\u2019s World Disabled Swimmer of the Year by Swimming World.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Being named chef for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham is a huge honor, and I will do everything I can to ensure an inclusive and inspiring environment for our athletes,&#8221; Huot said <a href=\"https:\/\/commonwealthsport.ca\/news\/featured\/announcing-canadas-chef-de-mission-birmingham-2022-commonwealth-games-benoit-huot.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in a statement<\/a>. \u201cThe Commonwealth Games have been a significant part of my high-performance journey, and I believe that their focus on inclusivity and diversity is of even more importance in the world that we live in today. He was the Canada\u2019s assistant chef de mission at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, and its flagbearer at the closing ceremony of the 2012 Paralympic Games in London. He\u2019s been awarded the Order of Canada and the National Order of Quebec for his athletic achievements and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/the-morning-swim-show-april-13-2012-benoit-huot-on-increasing-worldwide-exposure-of-paralympics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">his advocacy for sporting inclusivity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement marks the two-year countdown to the games in Birmingham, England. Huot won four medals at the Commonwealth Games, competing in 2002, 2006 and 2010. He was also named the Commonwealth Games Federation Athlete of the Year with a Disability in 2003.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBen is an inspired choice as Team Canada\u2019s 2022 Chef de Mission,\u201d said <strong>Richard Powers<\/strong>, the president of Commonwealth Sport Canada. \u201cWith his storied background as an athlete and his incredible energy and passion for sport, he is the perfect person to lead our Team at the Birmingham Games. We look forward to working closely with him as we prepare our country\u2019s team for 2022 and know that he will give his all to ensure success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Huot jumped at the chance to play a role in Canada\u2019s delegation, part of his retirement plans to give back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI received so much from the sports system, and now that I\u2019m retired from sports, it\u2019s important for me to give back somehow,\u201d Huot said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/sports\/olympics\/summer\/commonwealth-games-canada-chef-de-mission-benoit-huot-1.5665882\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in an interview with CBC<\/a>. \u201cAnd this is a great opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Paralympic swimming champion Benoit Huot was named Canada\u2019s chef de mission for the delegation to the 2022 Commonwealth Games Tuesday.
