Swimmers will not be allowed to practice, let alone swim at meets. High school swim teams at YMCAs in Central Ohio will be affected as well, as this will be a huge blow to the sport in a large city like Columbus. High school teams regularly use YMCA facilities for practice and meets.<\/p>\n<p>The YMCA of Central Ohio follows the decision made by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ymca-of-central-florida-to-disband-competitive-teams-indefinitely-due-to-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">YMCA of Central Florida<\/a>, which cancelled its swim season as well. When that decision was handed down, there was worry it would cause a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/could-central-florida-ymca-team-cuts-generate-a-ripple-effect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ripple effect<\/a>\u00a0elsewhere.\u00a0<a Europe Correspondent<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>World champion\u00a0<strong>Florian Wellbrock<\/strong>\u00a0had a good hitout at the\u00a0<strong>Magdeburg Swim Meet<\/strong>\u00a0 on Saturday with a dominant victory in the 1500 free on his return to racing.<\/p>\n<p>Wellbrock \u2013 who became the first man to win the 1500 free and 10k at the same world titles last year in Gwangju \u2013 dominated the race in 14:53.62, almost a minute ahead of his rivals.<\/p>\n<p>That followed the German\u2019s impressive effort in the 400 free heats where he was the only man inside 3:50, stopping D&#8217;Addona<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Arizona State is the first power five college swimming and diving program to make a decision about the upcoming college season \u2014 and\u00a0<strong>Bob Bowman<\/strong>\u00a0made a stunning announcement that the entire team will take a redshirt this season and focus on 2021-22.<\/p>\n<p>Bowman consulted with the team and the athletes\u2019 parents before making the decision.<\/p>\n<p>According to the school, all involved parties agree this plan will allow for maximum flexibility and confidence for the student-athletes and their families in regards to their location and practice situation due to COVID-19. All members of the Sun Devil swimming &amp; diving programs will redshirt and only train in 2020-21, with the expectation the entire roster will return in 2021-22.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn March, (Vice President for University Athletics)\u00a0<strong>Ray Anderson<\/strong>\u00a0challenged all Sun Devil head coaches to find ways to make our programs stronger after the COVID-19 crisis,\u201d Bowman said. \u201cThis decision clearly accomplishes that goal.
