{"id":440580,"date":"2020-07-20T11:31:14","date_gmt":"2020-07-20T18:31:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=440580"},"modified":"2020-07-20T11:31:14","modified_gmt":"2020-07-20T18:31:14","slug":"high-school-sports-in-california-delayed-through-the-fall-by-cif","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/high-school-sports-in-california-delayed-through-the-fall-by-cif\/","title":{"rendered":"High School Sports in California Delayed through the Fall by CIF"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) has announced that high school sports in the state will be indefinitely delayed with start dates anticipated in December or next January.<\/p>\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/cifstate.org\/mediacenter\/releases\/2019-20\/PR-34_7.20.20_CIF_Statement_2020-21_Sports_Calendar_Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">opaque press release Monday<\/a>, the CIF announced that \u201ceducation-based athletics for the 2020-2021 school year will begin with a modified season of sport schedule.\u201d That schedule will be determined in collaboration with the CIF\u2019s 10 regional sections.<\/p>\n<p>The CIF announcement works backward by setting end dates for competition in the 2020-21 academic year, as the release includes the last day for section playoffs and regional\/state championships. It will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/highschool\/story\/2020-07-20\/cif-delays-california-high-school-sports-season-until-december-or-january\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">up to the sections to determine when competition can start<\/a>. That won\u2019t happen in the fall months.<\/p>\n<p>Among the formerly fall sports, boys and girls water polo will move to March championship dates, with section playoffs ending March 13, 2021 and regional\/state competition ending a week later. Swimming will move to a spring schedule, with the final date for sections on May 29, 2021 and the regional\/state championships June 5. That&#8217;s a delay of only a few weeks from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/northwood-boys-claim-victory-at-2018-cif-swimming-diving-championships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the usual championship dates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>From the CIF release:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe are continuously monitoring the directives and guidelines released from the Governor&#8217;s Office, the California Department of Education, the California Department of Public Health, and local county health departments and agencies as these directives and guidelines are followed by our member schools\/school districts with student health and safety at the forefront.
