These off events could include trying out for open water, you never know! Sometimes it might turn out that transitioning to the ocean was not that bad of an idea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Distance Swimming = Open Water?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is common that distance swimmers make this transition and take advantage of their renowned endurance. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.olympic.org\/arturo-perez-vertti-ferrer\">Mexican Olympian in London 2012<\/a> and distance swimmer, <strong>Arturo Perez-Vertti<\/strong>, swam his first open water race in 2010. That is the case with Rio 2016 1500m gold medalist for Italy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/gregorio-paltrinieri-moves-from-morini-to-antonelli-as-olympic-1500m-champion-shifts-goals-from-pool-to-open-water\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Gregorio <\/strong><\/a><\/span><b>Paltrinieri<\/b>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who surprised us last year in Gwangju by finishing sixth in the 10k.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swimmers might just want to try open water for the sake of the experience, finding out that this was the place to be. In other cases, different factors may influence a swimmer&#8217;s decision to give it a shot.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Coaching Guidance<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a coach sees you have potential in a specific event, you are mostly encouraged by them. in the 50m back SCM I would only swim 20 meters because I would take advantage of my underwater swim,\u201d said Betanzos. \u201cBut it hurt a lot, so I started to focus on strengthening my upper body, gave it a try at open water Mexican Nationals, and <a href=\"https:\/\/sipse.com\/deportes\/busca-betanzos-su-pase-a-selectivo-olimpico-179179.html\">qualified for the 2015 World Championships in Kazan<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Pool vs. Ocean<\/h2>\n<h3>External Factors<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Athletes face tougher challenges in open water swimming than in the pool when it comes to external forces. \u201cWhen developing a training plan for an open water swimmer, coaches must consider that there are different sceneries\u2015lakes, rivers, sea\u2015and each of them has characteristics such as currents, water density and winds that affect performance,\u201d said <strong>Christian Garcia<\/strong>, Mexico\u2019s national open water team head coach at the 2019 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FINA Marathon Swim World Series.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\">\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B1RjxrinkRn\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\" style=\" background:#FFF; Hence, they should practice orientation and combine side and front breathing for the same reason. \u201cIn the pool we swim in our lane looking at the line down the floor; in open water you can\u2019t count on it to give you direction,\u201d explains Perez-Vertti. \u201cTherefore, you must take your head out front constantly to remain closer to the circuit, and not lose track.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Psychological Adaptation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/how-open-water-swimming-can-boost-pool-performance\/\">Transitioning to open water means facing adversity<\/a> to another level for both the swimmer and the coach. Long hours of training and competition are typical in this discipline. \u201cOne of the challenges I\u2019ve faced is to keep my athlete motivated and focused on his or her goal,\u201d confesses coach Garcia. \u201cDue to the characteristics of the program that tends to be long and tedious, the athletes experience boredom and psychological fatigue.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, when they overcome this barrier, they can achieve what was once thought impossible. Yet, it also allows them to live a whole new experience.
