\u201cIt was amazing getting back in the water,\u201d said Nate Schulhoff,<\/strong> who confessed it felt like forever since he was last able to swim.<\/p>\n

\"FINAL_hustle_logo\"For 11-year-old Sabrina Kazemi<\/strong>, along with her friend Naila Noble<\/strong>, the chance to jump into a pool\u2014even in the midst of a pandemic\u2014was simply too good to pass up.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was really nice; I love being in the water,\u201d she said, then added wistfully, \u201cI wish we could do it more\u2014but we\u2019ll try as often as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

The occasion? Earlier this month, members of the Brooklyn Water Polo Club<\/a> swam together\u2014albeit in a limited fashion\u2014for the first time in four months. The club rented time at an in-ground private pool in suburban Long Island, approximately 40 minutes by car from members\u2019 homes in downtown Brooklyn. Six athletes and two coaches\u2014the husband-and-wife team of Mike Byrd<\/strong> and Layla Behzadian<\/strong>\u2014jumped into the refreshing backyard pool.<\/p>\n

To get back in the water, the club looked to Swimply<\/a>, a year-old rental service known as \u201cAirbnb for pools.\u201d The backyard pool\u201440\u2019 x 20\u2019\u2014was entirely different from the club\u2019s usual practice spots\u2014indoor pools at Long Island University\u2019s downtown Brooklyn location or at Medgar Evers College in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Nevertheless, the Swimply-supplied pool provided exactly what the youngsters craved: physical activity and friendship.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s great that they get to go into a pool and practice like they used to,\u201d said Naomi Relnick<\/strong>, mother to nine-year-old Scarlett and 11-year-old Max Lippiatt. \u201cThey\u2019re lucky! They get to jump in a pool and see their friends.\u201d<\/p>\n

A fitness trainer specializing in yoga, Relnick has kept her children active the past few months\u2014though Zoom schooling and curated physical activities go only so far in filling the life gap created by the virus.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like it could take another one, two years for things to get back to what they used to be,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Safely facilitated connections and activity, according to Todd Lippiatt<\/strong>, dad to Max and Scarlett, might be the best antidote for a virus-induced\u00a0black cloud shadowing the experiences of all New Yorkers\u2014and young people in particular.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is no doubt going to be one of the most memorable things of their childhood,\u201d said Lippiatt. \u201cKids are incredibly impressionable; it\u2019s a matter of keeping their spirits up because they’ve lost everything they know to be normal.\u201d<\/p>\n

There\u2019s little surprise that someone expanded the Airbnb model to other types of properties. Simple principles of supply and demand made it possible for Swimply to take advantage, at least temporarily, of aquatic sports\u2019 greatest obstacle during the pandemic: pool time. With public pools only now opening, Swimply\u2019s rental business plan provides a great opportunity for young athletes to exercise and get reacquainted.<\/p>\n

For Gabriel Noble<\/strong>, Naila\u2019s father, the outing was memorable, although he wasn\u2019t entirely clear about how it worked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought this was a private home of somebody associated with [our club], so I\u2019m happy to be part of this Guinea pig experience of renting a pool,\u201d he said. Asked about how wise it was to have a group of adults and coaches congregate\u2014albeit outdoors around a chlorinated pool\u2014Noble maintained that it was safe because of the precautions taken.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel really comfortable with it,\u201c he said. \u201cWe got tested; I know the other kids were asked to be tested. I feel [that] we’re all playing on the same team\u2014that is, we\u2019re thinking about safety first \u2026 [and] we all did our part.\u201d<\/p>\n

After a couple of hours in the pool swimming laps, practicing the egg-beater technique so distinctive to polo, and working through other exercises, the youngsters emerged and toweled off, and the experiment seemed a success.<\/p>\n

But as parents and children lingered on the suburban sidewalks of Inwood, a reminder of current hazards intruded on the morning\u2019s languid mood. A next-door neighbor\u2014angered by the noise of splashing children and perceiving indifference to the pandemic due to their maskless exercise\u2014confronted the Brooklynites.<\/p>\n

Generously mixing obscenities amid complaints of a \u201ccommercial group\u201d making trouble in a residential neighborhood, the disgruntled neighbor\u2014who, ironically, was not wearing a mask\u2014stormed off, leaving the clear impression that Swimply and its inventive model may need a bit of tweaking.<\/p>\n

Before returning to the urban reality of Brooklyn, Nate Schulhoff reflected on his absence from training.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been sad because I was getting better at water polo,\u201d he said, then added hopefully, \u201cIf I keep doing this, I\u2019ll be as good as I used to\u2014and probably better.\u201d<\/p>\n
