THE Florida State men’s swimming team remained perfect on the season, improving to 4-0, after defeating Indian River Community College, the nation’s No. 1 junior college program, Saturday morning at the Bim Stults Pool by the score of 136-102. T

he Seminoles were able to sneak past the Pioneers thanks in part to the performance of sophomore Louie Gagnet. Gagnet, last year’s ACC Most Valuable Diver, won both the one- and three-meter springboard events and broke his own three-meter school record in doing so. Gagnet’s score of 380.92 on the three-meter surpassed the previous record of 363.85, which he set last season. He scored 312.75 to win the one-meter event.

The Seminoles started the meet off strong, winning four of the first five events, before having to stave-off a comeback attempt by the Pioneers. The Tribe scored first in the 200-yard medley relay when junior Tal Stricker, sophomores Andrew Castro and Michael Averett and freshman Brent Campbell combined to touch the wall at 1:37.67. The Seminoles had a second relay team actually finish ahead of Stricker and company, but it was disqualified.

FSU went on to earn wins from sophomore Alan Ribeiro in the 1000-yard freestyle (9:48.01), junior Fernando Jacome, a former Pioneer swimmer, in the 200-free (1:41.86) and junior Wickus Nienaber in the 200-yard individual medley (1:57.59) before IRCC made its run of four-straight wins in the swimming events.

Nienaber, however, put an end to IRCC’s comeback with his second win, and the Seminole’s last, of the day in the 100-yard breaststroke (57.96).

The Lady Seminoles had no trouble improving their record to 4-0 on the season with an impressive victory over I.R.C.C., 184-59. Saturday’s victory marks the 13th consecutive dual meet win for the Lady Seminoles.

The FSU victory came in a commanding fashion as Florida State won 12 of the day’s 13 events. Juniors Emma Dutton and Loren Hansen led the way for the Tribe, combining to win a total of five events on the afternoon. Junior Chelsie Lerew was also impressive winning on both the one- and three-meter diving events.

The tandem of Dutton and Hansen joined up with fellow juniors Katie Byrnes and Rachel Dong to put together a first place time of 1:48.64 in the 200-yard medley relay and put the Lady Seminoles on track to have big day winning the first event.

From there the Lady Seminoles went on to win three out of the next four events with Hansen picking up a victory in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.05) and Dutton winning in the 50-free with a time of 23.92. Hansen also went on to win 100-yard breaststroke and the 500-free, while Dutton turned in a winning contribution in 100-breast.

Senior Liz Parkinson and Sophomore Emily Breen also turned in great performances for the Lady Seminoles winning two events a piece. Individually, Parkinson won the 100-free (53.48) and Breen won the 100-yard butterfly (56.97). Both Parkinson and Breen teamed up with Sophomores Kayce Zemina and Christie Pesce to win the 200- free relay with a time of 1:38.39.

In diving action, the Lady Seminoles continued their winning ways by sweeping I.R.C.C on the one- and three-meter boards. Lerew was the top performer for the Lady Seminoles as she put together first-place finishes on both the one- and three- meter boards. Sophomores Tiffany Manning and Courtney McClow also dove well for the Lady Seminoles today. Manning earned a second-place finish on the three-meter board and McClow also earned a second-place finish on the one-meter board. The Lady Seminoles teamed up to earn a total of 32 points in the diving events.

FSU will host its third-straight home meet on Nov. 19, when they take on rival Florida. The meet will begin at 6 p.m. and will be held at the Leach Center Pool, FSU’s indoor facility.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Nov. 9.
