The decision is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.com\/sports\/college-sports\/2020\/07\/03\/umass-dartmouth-cuts-8-athletic-teams-not-virus-related\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reportedly not related to coronavirus<\/a> budget reductions.<\/p>\n<p>The programs cut include women\u2019s equestrian, men\u2019s golf, men\u2019s lacrosse, co-ed sailing and men\u2019s and women\u2019s tennis. The cuts are effective immediately and affect a total of 94 students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough these changes will serve UMass Dartmouth Athletics and its student body well for years to come, I cannot begin to imagine the sense of loss our student-athletes must feel at this moment. I want them to know that this decision in no way reflects their tremendous contribution to our University,\u201d Chancellor <strong>Robert E. Johnson<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.corsairathletics.com\/general\/Department_Announcement_07-01-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said in a statement<\/a>. \u201cIt is because of these contributions &#8211; not just on the field &#8211; but in the classrooms, labs, and in the community that makes our student-athletes such valuable members of our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The decision was the product of \u201cmultiple reviews over the past decade\u201d as part of a long-term strategic plan for the university. The school has committed to reinvest the savings into the remaining 17 athletic programs. That number is more in line with most Division III colleges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThough the review and subsequent actions taken on the future of intercollegiate athletics was needed, I am deeply saddened by having to discontinue sponsorship of these programs,\u201d Athletic Director <strong>Amanda Van Voorhis<\/strong> said. \u201cThe implementation of this action now will allow our department to work within a sustainable financial model going forward, and we will continue to provide the best possible experience for our student-athletes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The news comes a day after the Corsairs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.corsairathletics.com\/sports\/w-swim\/2019-20\/releases\/Spring_2020_CSCAA_Scholar_All-America_Release\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">swimming teams<\/a> were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.corsairathletics.com\/sports\/m-swim\/2019-20\/releases\/Spring_2020_CSCAA_Scholar_All-America_Release\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">both recognized<\/a> as CSCAA Scholar All-America Honorees.<\/p>\n<p>The decision has left swimmers scrambling, and it&#8217;s a particularly difficult double-whammy for incoming freshmen who&#8217;ve just seen the end of their high school careers affected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t understand how they determine that one child\u2019s athletic ambitions are less important than somebody else\u2019s,\u201d <strong>Lori Dumont<\/strong>, whose son Aaron Dumont was set to swim for the Corsairs in the fall, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpri.com\/sports\/college-sports\/family-frustrated-as-umass-dartmouth-suddenly-drops-swimming-other-athletic-programs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told WPRI.com<\/a>. \u201cIt just seems just kind of unfair that they get to take money from one program and add funding to another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>UMass Dartmouth joins at least six other programs to <a href=\"https:\/\/hoopdirt.com\/the-list-update-8-college-athletics-teams-cut-sports-suspended-schools-closing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">have dropped swimming<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/9326d1ca2fb8efba1df8544320770f18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recent months<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/boise-state-university-to-cut-swimming-and-diving\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boise State<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/university-of-connecticut-proposing-to-cut-mens-swimming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Connecticut<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/east-carolina-university-cuts-mens-womens-swimming-and-diving\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">East Carolina<\/a> and Western Illinois in Division I; Tiffin and Urbana in Division II.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UMass Dartmouth announced Wednesday that men\u2019s and women\u2019s swimming and diving are among eight varsity athletic program to be cut.
