{"id":437562,"date":"2020-06-27T01:37:22","date_gmt":"2020-06-27T08:37:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=437562"},"modified":"2020-06-28T12:08:22","modified_gmt":"2020-06-28T19:08:22","slug":"swim-england-gather-45000-signatures-as-they-campaign-for-pools-to-reopen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/swim-england-gather-45000-signatures-as-they-campaign-for-pools-to-reopen\/","title":{"rendered":"Swim England Gather 45,000 Signatures As They Campaign For Pools To Reopen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Swim England<\/strong> will present a petition to the government next week with almost 45,000 signatures calling for swimming pools to reopen as chief executive <strong>Jane Nickerson<\/strong> reflected on the campaign over recent days that has encompassed Olympic champions and grassroots.<\/p>\n<p>There had been some real optimism that pools would be able to reopen in England from 4 July only for hopes to be dashed although <strong>Prime Minister Boris Johnson<\/strong> gave the green light though for pubs, restaurants, hair salons, cinemas and museums to open for business once again from next Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>That prompted a furious backlash with the likes of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/adam-peaty-among-olympic-and-world-medallists-to-back-swim-england-campaign-to-reopen-pools\/\"><strong>Adam Peaty\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong> Becky Adlington\u00a0<\/strong>among present and former Olympic and world medallists to back Swim England\u2019s #OpenOur Pools campaign which launched within minutes of the announcement.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Peaty remained vocal, pointing to the repercussions for physical and mental health during an interview with the BBC while also directly addressing the prime minister on social media as he retweeted a post by <strong>Chris Hoy<\/strong>, six-time Olympic cycling champion.<\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Obesity, diabetes, heart disease which we all know have a huge strain on the NHS. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BorisJohnson?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@BorisJohnson<\/a> where you at?! I\u2019m still struggling to get my head around the logic, especially as our Returning to the Pool guidance \u2013 which has been developed in consultation with Public Health England \u2013 proves how swimming can be safely done.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Over the hectic few days that have followed, however, my over-riding feeling has been one of pride.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019ve been proud of the way we quickly responded to the news by launching the <a title=\"Swim England #OpenOurPools campaign\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swimming.org\/swimengland\/open-our-pools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#OpenOurPools campaign<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>She added:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Yes, some people have told us they don\u2019t agree with our stance. relax.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will continue to fight for more financial help from the Government to ensure those facilities at risk of permanent closure get the necessary support they\u2019ll need to stay
