THE #12-ranked Georgia men’s swimming and diving team improved to 3-0 on the year with a 155-126 win against instate rival Georgia Tech (1-2) Thursday evening at Gabrielsen Natatorium. The
Bulldogs won 10 events in the meet.

"The kids did a great job tonight," Georgia head coach Jack Bauerle said. "It was two tired teams and we both looked tried. We were able to move some people around tonight. I am never sure what we are going to get when we swim Tech, because of the natural rivalry that we have. I think (Georgia Tech head coach) Seth (Baron) is preparing them for the end of the year. Right now we are just a little bit better than they are."

Sophomore Todd Avery, who is a native of Athens, took top honors on both the 1-meter and 3-meter events, as he posted personal-best marks in both events. Avery had a score of 307.42 on the 1-meter and scored
354.67 on the 3-meter. His previous bests were 295.90 and 353.85 on the 1- and 3-meter, respectively.

"I am diving really well right now," said Avery. "I did dive exceptional today. Things just clicked. We have been working on a lot of new dives on the 1-meter (for this meet)."

The Bulldogs (3-0) got off to a quick start, as the foursome of Peter Osborn, Kyle Salyards, Randy Lam and Damian Alleyne posted a season-best time of 3:22.82 to win the 400-yard medley relay in the first event of
the night. The Bulldogs would win the next five events, including a season-best time of 56.92 by Salyards to take top honors in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Thursday’s meet marked the first time Georgia had competed in the 1,650-yard freestyle this season, and both Robert Margalis and Cole Taylor recorded NCAA provisional qualifying times. Margalis won the event with a time of 15:21.79, while Taylor took second in 15:26.24.

Alleyne posted a pair of victories by winning the 100-yard freestyle (47.08) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:40.77). Matthew Owen, who was runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle, finished first with a time of 4:28.93 in the 500-yard free. Miguel Mendoza placed second in 4:37.67.

Andrew Mahaney stopped the clock in 1:50.26 to win the 200-yard butterfly, and Colin Underhill claimed first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 51.80. Lam had a pair of second-place finishes in the 100-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke.

Scott Gardner had the fastest time in the 50-yard freestyle but did not score because he was an exhibition swimmer.

"We got a couple nice surprises, especially Cole Taylor. I think (tonight’s performance) puts him in a situation where we may be able to add another NCAA qualifier to our mix. He was not very far off (an NCAA
qualifying time)," added Bauerle. "Robert (Margalis) was Robert, and we can put him anywhere. I think Randy did a nice job too. We have some good young guys right now.

"Scott Gardner did a good job in the 50 (yard free), but he also had our fastest relay split of the year in the 100 breaststroke."

Senior Tomonori Tsuji had a strong evening for the Georgia Tech Jackets, recording a season-best mark of 2:04.71 in the 200-yard breaststroke and going 58.42 in the 100 breast to place third. Classmate Robbie Foster took second in the 100 breast with a time of 57.19.

Other season-bests for Tech came from junior Mike Comer, who went 21.47 in the 50 free, senior Josh Hersko, who clocked a time of 47.27 in the 100 free, and junior Paul McCarty, who posted a score of 297.97 in the three-meter diving. He also placed second on the one-meter board (282.52).

Senior All-American Shilo Ayalon placed third in both the 1650 (15:33.14) and 500 free (4:39.13), while classmate Jorge Oliver took third in the 100 back in a time of 52.60.

Georgia will be back in action Friday, Nov. 15, as the men and women will take on Atlantic Coast Conference opponent Clemson at Gabrielsen Natatorium beginning at 5 p.m.

Tech's men's and women's teams return to action against Purdue and Cincinnati in a two-day meet that opens November 15 in West Lafayette, Ind.

Final
