It\u2019s <strong>Katie Ledecky,<\/strong> owner of five Olympic gold medals and 15 World Championships. Adding the 1500 freestyle to the women\u2019s program for the first time might change some of the equation for distance swimmers at the 2021 Trials. But if history is any guide, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/olympics\/for-katie-ledecky-olympic-1500-another-chance-to-distance-herself-from-competition\/2017\/06\/26\/ad01cbd4-5a90-11e7-9b7d-14576dc0f39d_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">it may just mean more medals for Ledecky<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>The Favorite<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong>. Since then, she\u2019s become a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ally-mchugh-aims-to-keep-momentum-pushing-toward-2021\/\">full-fledged national team member<\/a>, with an NCAA title, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/u-s-nationals-powerhouse-ally-mchugh-takes-home-third-national-title\/\">five national championships<\/a> and trips to the World University Games, Pan Pacs and 2019 Worlds.<\/p>\n<p>The 400 IM might be her best shot at Tokyo, but the 800 is a viable option, too. She\u2019ll have the longer IM on Day 1 of the 2021 Trials, the shorter IM on Day 4 and then a run at the 800 on Day 7. Her top time of 8:26.04 from nationals in 2019 is the fastest for an American outside of the Ledecky-Smith duopoly.<\/p>\n<p>(A close second, by the way, to that rapid development over the last four years is another 800 free contender <strong>Kaersten Meitz,<\/strong> who was 64th in the 200 and 800 and 29th in the 400 free at 2016 Trials.)<\/p>\n<h4>Looking ahead to 2021<\/h4>\n<p>The loss in the 400 free at Worlds indicated that Ledecky wasn\u2019t at her best in Gwangju. But Ledecky still won gold there in the 800 in 8:13.58 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/watch-katie-ledecky-come-from-behind-in-epic-800-free-win-race-video\/\">in a gutsy swim<\/a>. It\u2019s telling that the three swimmers behind her \u2013 <strong>Simona Quadarella<\/strong> (8:14.99), <strong>Ariarne Titmus<\/strong> (8:15.70), <strong>Sarah Kohler<\/strong> (8:16.43) \u2013 all set personal bests\/national records and still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-ledecky-makes-the-memory-that-will-fuel-her-to-tokyo-2020-in-epic-800m-with-simone-quadarella\/\">couldn\u2019t catch Ledecky<\/a>, who was nine seconds shy of her world record. Toss in <strong>Wang<\/strong> <strong>Jianjiahe&#8217;s<\/strong>\u00a08:14.64 at Chinese nationals in 2019 (she\u2019s only 16, so one to watch), and Ledecky is still a cut above, the only one to have visited the subterranean depths below 8:10.<\/p>\n<p>The fact is that Ledecky at her best is better than anyone who\u2019s ever swum the event. So the question is, will Ledecky be at that best?
