CANBERRA, Australia, November 7. THE Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) announced today the appointment of one of Australia\u2019s top coaches, Glenn Beringen, to its swimming program.<\/p>\n
Beringen has been the head coach of the South Australian Institute of Sport Swimming Program for the past 11 years, where he has coached athletes to five world records (short course), three individual, and two in relays. <\/p>\n
As an athlete, he won a silver medal at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles (200m breastroke) and silver at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane.<\/p>\n
The 38-year-old said he was delighted to be given the opportunity to work at arguably the best sporting institution in the world.<\/p>\n
"The AIS is regarded throughout the world as being at the forefront of elite athlete development," Beringen said. "It is a tremendous honor to be joining the AIS, and I\u2019m looking forward to working with the other great swim coaches at the Institute."<\/p>\n
AIS Director Michael Scott said Beringen\u2019s appointment, following on from that of Canadian and former Phoenix Swim Club coach Pierre Lafontaine, would bring vitality to the AIS swimming program, which continues to help strengthen Australian Swimming through the development of talented athletes.<\/p>\n
"The AIS Swimming Program has some outstanding junior talent coming through its ranks at the moment and Glenn\u2019s background as a coach will be vital in helping to nurture those promising athletes," Scott said.<\/p>\n
"The reality is that to be internationally competitive in the fierce world of sport, athletes must have a high level of service. The AIS continues to deliver world best practices across all areas and disciplines, including having the best coaches."<\/p>\n
Australian Swimming has also welcomed Beringen\u2019s appointment. "Glenn\u2019s move to Canberra is not only of great value to the AIS Swimming Program but also to Australian Swimming in general," High Performance Director Greg Hodge said<\/p>\n
The AIS Swimming Program, funded by the Federal Government through the Australian Sports Commission, provided 10 members of the all-conquering Australian team at this years Commonwealth Games in Manchester, contributing 10 gold, two silver and three bronze medals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
