We\u2019re sure this time. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/story\/sports\/olympics\/2019\/08\/29\/michael-phelps-peace-sitting-out-olympics-first-time-since-2000\/2011829001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pretty sure<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At long last, what will be 21 years after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CoA1riHb3mY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lanky 15-year-old first stepped<\/a> onto the deck in Sydney, American swimming will get a glimpse at a post-Phelps 200 fly. And it will look like \u2026 well, a year out, it looks like an open door for someone to assert themselves.<\/p>\n<h4>The Favorite<\/h4>\n<p>This is tough. A quick look at the post-Phelps performances at major events in this race:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">2017 Worlds<\/span>: <strong>Jack Conger<\/strong> fifth, <strong>Pace Clark<\/strong> ninth<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">2019 Worlds<\/span>: <strong>Zach Harting<\/strong> sixth, <strong>Justin Wright<\/strong> 18th<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">2019 World University Games<\/span>: <strong>Jack Saunderson<\/strong> ninth, <strong>Trenton Julian<\/strong> 13th<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So then the favorite is \u2026 <strong>Luca Urlando<\/strong>? An 18-year-old who has never represented the United States at a senior international meet and is coming off a dislocated shoulder? Sure.<\/p>\n<p>He won a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/luca-urlando-chats-about-200-fly-national-title-video-interview\/\">senior national title last year<\/a>, and he\u2019s the only American to be sub 1:55 in the last 18 months, per USA Swimming\u2019s database. He\u2019s done it four times, the fastest a 1:53.84. Photo Courtesy: Peter H. Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Part of the equation is, how many swimmers have avoided the 200 fly the last decade because of the immovable object that is Phelps? And will some of those talented generalists look to fill that void at the 2021 Trials?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jack Conger<\/strong> is a prime example. He won silver <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/caeleb-dressel-leads-100-fly-1-2-with-jack-conger\/\">at Pan Pacs in the 100 fly<\/a> and is a 200 free contender. <strong>Chase Kalisz, Gunnar Bentz<\/strong> and <strong>Andrew Seliskar<\/strong> fall <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/chase-kalisz-chases-down-jack-conger-in-200-fly-in-atlanta\/\">into this category<\/a>, too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Zach Harting<\/strong> is in the picture. <strong>Nick Albiero<\/strong> and <strong>Sam Pomajevich<\/strong> are rising college stars.<\/p>\n<h4>The Longshots<\/h4>\n<p>It\u2019s less a longshot than an unknown commodity: <strong>Tom Shields<\/strong> qualified for the 2016 Olympics in both butterfly events. He did that despite profound inner turmoil <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/tom-shields-opens-up-about-what-led-him-to-near-suicide-experience-in-2018\/\">that led to personal struggles two years later.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now, Shields has sought counseling. And in 2020, he got <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/tom-shields-sets-lifetime-best-in-200-yard-butterfly\/\">back to setting best times<\/a>. If Shields could accomplish what he did carrying the emotional burden that he did in 2016, what can he do at the 2021 Trials while finding peace and happiness in the pool? It\u2019s a lovely thing to contemplate.<\/p>\n<h4>Looking ahead to 2021<\/h4>\n<p>Shields will be 29 at the 2021 Trials, but most of the other contenders will be squarely in their mid-20s (Conger 26, Kalisz 27, Bentz 25). The postponement most benefits Urlando with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/what-a-dislocated-shoulder-can-mean-as-luca-urlando-begins-healing-process\/\">added time to recover<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Globally, it also means an extra year for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kristof-milak-crushes-michael-phelps-world-record-in-200-fly-with-150-73\/\">new world-record holder<\/a> <strong>Kristof Milak<\/strong> to grow.
