Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Fellow Cal backstroker <strong>Rachel Bootsma<\/strong>, who won multiple NCAA titles in the event, was the other Olympian on the team after unseating <strong>Natalie Coughlin<\/strong>, who won the gold medal in 2004 and 2008 in the 100 backstroke.<\/p>\n<p>But Coughlin was not done.<\/p>\n<p>At age 33, Coughlin was still at the top of the sport. She had the top seed in the 100 back heading into the 2016 trials at 59.05. Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In addition to Coughlin who was a past Cal swimmer, and Franklin, a future Cal swimmer, the event was loaded with Cal colors at the top of the psych sheet. <strong>Kathleen Baker<\/strong> was the fifth seed, while Bootsma, a 2012 Olympian, was the eighth seed, ahead of <strong>Elizabeth Pelton<\/strong> and <strong>Amy Bilquist<\/strong>, also Golden Bears \u2014 giving Cal six of the top 10 seeds heading into Trials.<\/p>\n<p>Georgia\u2019s <strong>Olivia Smoliga<\/strong> was the third seed at age 21, while 17-year-old <strong>Claire Adams<\/strong>, heading to Texas, was hoping to be a factor, as were Missouri\u2019s <strong>Hannah Stevens<\/strong> and Michigan\u2019s <strong>Ali DeLoof<\/strong> and <strong>Clara Smiddy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Little did we know what the future held for two others in the top 20 on the psych sheet \u2014\u00a0<strong>Regan Smith<\/strong> and <strong>Alex Walsh<\/strong> \u2014\u00a0both just 14 years old.<\/p>\n<p>But Adams, Pelton and Bootsma did not make the finals, setting up a showdown between Smoliga, Baker, Bilquist and DeLoof, along with Coughlin and Franklin.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olivia-smoliga-smokes-100-back-final-moves-to-fourth-in-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>The Race<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What developed was a stunning outcome.<\/p>\n<p>Not only did the top two seeds finish seventh and eighth in the finals, but those seeds were <strong>Missy Franklin<\/strong> and <strong>Natalie<\/strong> <strong>Coughlin<\/strong>, who combined, owned the last three Olympic gold medals in the event at that point.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_210821\" style=\"width: 444px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-210821\" data-attachment-id=\"210821\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2016-trials-throwback-smoliga-baker-lead-changing-of-the-guard-in-womens-100-backstroke\/amy-bilquist-16\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/amy-bilquist-2016-o-trials-10632-e1556760418182.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"1100,733\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;2.8&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;Peter H. Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Kathleen Baker<\/strong> was out the fastest in 28.68 at the turn, ahead of <strong>Olivia Smoliga<\/strong> (28.86) and <strong>Ali DeLoof<\/strong> (28.87) with Coughlin still in the race after the turn.<\/p>\n<p>But it was Smoliga who had the most left in the tank in the back half of the race, splitting a 30.16 to win the race in 59.02 and punch her ticket to Rio. Smoliga took 33 strokes, one fewer than every swimmer in the field except for Coughlin.<\/p>\n<p>Baker was right on her heels, taking second in 59.29, just ahead of future Cal teammate <strong>Amy Bilquist<\/strong> (59.39), and a charging DeLoof (59.69).<\/p>\n<p>There were two new Olympians in the event for the first time this century.<\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/titmXC36SxA?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p><strong>Results<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Olivia Smoliga, 59.02<br \/>\n2. Natalie Coughlin, 1:00.48<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>On to Rio<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While it was Smoliga who earned the win at Trials, it was Baker who ended up having a better swim in the Olympic final.<\/p>\n<p>Baker won the silver medal in 58.75 to finish behind Hungary\u2019s <strong>Katinka Hosszu<\/strong> (58.45).
